For a rising 7th grader, I am thinking of using one of these. If the grammar and/or writing isn’t enough, thinking of adding Easy Grammar and/or Jump In Writing.

Opinions of any of these, please? Thanks!

I’ve only ever used OMT.  It would not need any grammar supplementation, but it does not have any writing instruction.  We do, in fact, use it in conjunction with Jump In for middle school.

Oh that sounds wonderful, then. Thank you!

By the way, will you do any grammar after 7th grade? I am thinking perhaps just a review course of some sort for 8th, possibly 10th, then focus on writing for the rest of high school? Thanks!

Oh, do you know of anywhere that has samples of OMT?

Yes, Amazon has quite an extensive Look Inside feature on it.  I think it should help.

If you find a review is needed after OMT, go through it again.  Wink

Now I am also looking at Simply Grammar! So many choices!!

I originally wanted something like ILL (that is what we are doing this year) but other than Queen’s, I can’t find anything for upper grades. I have read some reviews that Queen’s lacks in grammar fairly bad, though. :/

I always check CBD for samples of anything.  If they sell it, they usually have samples.

I’m selling a used copy of OMT.  Pm me if you decide to go that route.

Can anyone tell me how heavy/intertwined the sentence diagramming is in OMT, please? I think that may make my decision much easier. 🙂

It is simple, and in several lessons at the end, but not in the majority of lessons.  In our home, I supplemented it as am a diagramming believer.  It is there.  But it is not extensive or central.

Ok, thank you! I think we will end up going with OMT, then. He hates diagramming, and while he has done some through his other grammar programs, I am not looking to continue it further.

    Thanks, again!

We have several of the Queen’s LLs. The high school grammar review one has all the parts of speech, but they are not drilled like traditional programs. As an adult, I can read the instructions and quickly understand the concept. If you want grammar that quickly covers the basics, this is it! Personally, I am not sure what I want, and it varies for each of my kids.

I bought this for my 9th grader as one last review before I leave her to writing and looking up issues in a style guide as they come up for the rest of high school. She used Stevenson Grammar and one year of Rod & Staff English prior to LL. She found LL too easy. After investigation I found she knows grammar well, and I am releasing her from grammar programs.

Part of my confusion is how hard to push grammar with different learners, and what is college prep. Rod & Staff is college prep. and difficult for the grammar- challenged.

Simply Grammar is a nice way to start grammar up through JH, IMO.

Stevenson is not CM, but good for special needs.

Queen’s LL, I love the CM elements and variety, but agree most would supplement the grammar. I like having LL around

for days I am not as available for school. I feel good knowing that I am covering my basics and the kids like the material.

In my catalog, OMT is recommended for grade 4 and up. What grade/age did you all begin using it?

Found Bookworm’s answer to this in another thread. Gr. 7 or 8 & take it at child’s pace, review periodically.
