Our little Spartan cousin

Has anyone used this book or series? I have the yesterdays classics collection, which includes our little Spartan cousin, our little Macedonian cousin, and our little Athenian cousin. It’s hard for me to tell how long they are, since I just have the ebooks. Is there a lot of overlap between the three books, since they are all about Greece? I also have Three Greek Children by Alfred Church that looks good too. Reading all four of these would probably be too much, so I’m trying to narrow it down. Lol.
We read Spartan Cousin and really enjoyed it. The book really gave us a narrative picture of Spartan life. It’s a pretty short read, 102 pages. We didn’t read the others but families in my library have enjoyed those as well.
We read all three, and they were all different. No overlap, from what I remember. We read them last year, and my boys (6&8) loved them. They didn’t take long, and the boys remembered a lot.
They are all Greek but each of the city-states had their own culture in many ways so they all end up showing more of the ideas that each city-state prized as their ideal. If you read them in order of Sparta, Athens, and Macedonia, you will read them in the order of their most prominent and influential place in Greek history.
Sounds like I could read all three OR the three Greek children book, it looks longer and includes both Athens and Sparta.
Out of curiosity how long did it take for you to read these? I wasn’t sure how long to schedule them in for?
There are 10 – 15 or so chapters per book. It would depend on how you schedule them. My older girls read them for personal history reading in 4-5 grades.
Hmm… So I could have my 10yo read these while I read the three Greek children to my younger kids. Though he would probably listen in.
I read the Spartan and Athens books to my children last year in grades 1 and 3. I did not realize there was one on Macedonia as well, but to fit it in we would have had to read the other two books more often since I didn’t start them until later in our study on Greece. I would recommend them for all of elementary whether as a read aloud to include the younger ones or as independent reading for upper elem. I don’t know anything about the Three Greek Children, so I can’t comment on it.
