I know a lot of you on the forum use essential oils, and I’ve been using just a couple of them myself. I am placing an order and I’m trying to figure out which 3 or 4 I want to order, besides the lavender that I’m almost out of anyway.

So, what are your 3 most useful essential oils? I am already using them for cleanig products, but I’m also going to put a few drops in my deodorant recipe and maybe hand soap and shampoo. Just wondering which ones are your favorites for various things.

Lavender, but then I grow it, too and make my own EO.  Between the EO and hydrosol we use a lot of it around here for bites (anti-itching) to burns to calming.   I’ve been using chamomile lately as well.

I use a lot of peppermint. Helps with mental clarity, tummy aches, and I use it when I brush my teeth to really freshen my breath.

    Lavender, of course.

Eucalyptus, lemon, and citronella are useful for homemade bug spray and flea spray for the dog.

I add lemon oil to my mop water for hardwood floors.

I rub camphor oil on persistently itchy big bites.

I add tea tree oil to homemade disinfecting spray since it’s anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral.

Eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree oil and oregano would be my top EO’s.

Grapefruit is one of mine.  It is so fresh and lively!!  When I make soap, grapefruit is my favorite by far.

I use lavender and lemon for alergies plus orange for cleaning.  Peppermint for toothsoap and teatree for disinfecting and health.

Laurie I would love to know how you make your own EO from homegrown lavendar.  I have yet to successfull grow some, but I am perssistant and one of these days I will get a plant to grow.

We have about 500 plants, so I borrowed the still from LAWC (lavender association of western Colorado) of which we are members.  Last year I had another member distill, this year I wanted to try my hand.  It was a small still and took a solid week to get throguh it all, but I am happy I did.  I have seen videos on You Tube that show make shift ways to do small batches.  When growing lavender don’t overwater.  While it needs more in the beginning, it is pretty drought tolerant and the variety you are trying may make a difference depending on where you are.  most folks make the mistake of putting it in their irrigated yard.  that’s too much water for it. And it like full sun.  Some pictures of our lavender are on our website.  http://www.inntheorchardbnb.com

I would also recommend wintergreen which when used with a carrier oil is a great for pain relief in muscles/joints.

Peppermint for stomach and fevers (rub on the bottom of feet) and headaches.

OnGuard (I think it’s like Thieves) which has orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary for infection–especially on the skin. Also, we diffuse it to kill mold. It really works.

Oregano for stomach when we think it’s bacteria making us feel bad.

Lemon for stress. It just makes you feel good to smell it.

I have one called PastTense for headaches and tension. It has wintergreen, lavender, peppermint, frankincense, cilantro, marjoram, roman chamomile, basil and rosemary in it.

We regularly use lavendar, lemon, oregano, peppermint, basil, eucalyptus, and melaluca. I really like the blends of Breathe, OnGuard, Digestzen, PastTense, Solace, and Citrus Bliss.

Thanks for all of the replies. I see a number of people (in this and other posts) mentioning oregano oil. What are some typical uses for oregano oil?

We used Oreagano oil for ear and yeast infections. We take it internally via a capsule.

Oregano is used as an antibiotic and is a very hot oil. Use caution when taking internally and use a carrier oil on your skin to prevent burns. 😉

We use it for infections so things like pneumonia, staph and mrsa (with other oils and with a doctor’s diagnosis), bronchitis, ear infections, skin infections, etc. For the major diagnosis’, you will need to know how often and how much in order to treat it. I blogged here about one book I recently read and found helpful. I have treated these with this oil, but I also use the medical doctor. There is a time and place for both, IMO. =)
