As far as book series, my kids loved both of Chuck Black’s series. We finished one series, so purchased the next series for Christmas last year (then my son was almost 8). Mindware has a lot of educational games and ideas. This year all my son wants are star wars legos.

DS4 – Here is the bow & arrow set I chose for ds4 – https://www.etsy.com/listing/114309807/waldorf-inspired-handcrafted-compound?ref=related-1 ; he is also getting a child size workbench and some child size real tools.
DS9 (almost 10) is getting an electric scooter (lots on craigslist) and a locking footlocker (to keep ds4 out of his things)
