With various health things coming up with my dh and also with me, I have been having a “fun” time trying to keep track of everything. Add in 3 kids who all have health information to track, and my system of just remembering isn’t working.
I have been looking for months for a system (preferably free software) to try to track this information – something user friendly, and something that would do the family all together (so I don’t have to write the pediatrician’s contact information 3, coming up 4 times…) – nor do I want to have to enter in “family medical history” over and over into each file.
Here is what I’ve looked at…
Unani.ca – free personal health records by one of the Canadian universities – worked ok from what I tried, but each person is seperate – including a seperate login.
Health Frame + – don’t remember this one…. I think you need to pay for it…
Health Minder – just doesn’t look very nice or friendly
Microsoft Health Vault / Mayo Clinic Health Minder – looks like a possiblity, but I get an error when I try to creat a login. I’m also not too keen on Microsoft having my information, ykwim?
Minerva – $$$ – I used the free trial, and it seemed pretty nice – sometimes expected a bit more medical terminology than I had. I couldn’t get reports out of it that I liked… although the sample reports looked ok.
I know I’ve looked at other ones too.
I’ve even started looking at just using a paper method with binders (ick) but there is just so much…. and a lot I don’t have detailed information about – just what I remember.
Sorry, I can’t help on any eletronic format. I keep a composition notebook for each child. For my oldest it starts when she is 2, for the others as newborns. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s accurate and when I bring it to medical appts. I feel like doctors show a bit more respect, because I’m taking notes. I looked at a few medical journals in bookstores, but didn’t like the format of any of them, so I just went with a notebook and record chronologically. I write the date, type of visit, any medicines prescribed, etc. If I have questions, I write them down before the appt., then record the answers.
I keep one for myself too, but I will suggest that if you are very ill ask someone else to take notes for you. I had a severe illness and none of that is recorded in my book because I was too ill at the tiime and I never could fill out details – it was just too overwhelming. Thankfully, I’m fully recovered now.
At least start with the present, then you can go back and fill in as much as possible. Good luck finding something suitable for your needs.
What a good idea! I like the idea of a comp book for each person in the family actually (there are only four of us). I’ve tried making forms on the computer, but I don’t like to sit in front of my computer if I have just a quick question. While, I think I’ll go comp book shopping tomorrow! Thanks Carol!
I had a little pre-op meeting with an anesthesiologist (in case I need an emergency c-section) – and it ended up taking 4 hours…. it was like being in a final exam for university at times!
