I am wondering how you handle your read alouds.  Do you have your children narrate from every book (literature, history, bible) you read in a day?  And, what do you about read alouds you might have during lunch?  Would you recommend a “free reading” book during this time rather than a book you might want to have kids narrate?  I am working on our schedule and seem to have worked myself in a circle!  My kids are 8 and 5.  My 5 year old may or may not “tell back”.

    Thank you!

My kids are 12 and 9.  I require narrations from all books I read to them…not telling in advance who’ll I’ll ask and then sometimes asking the other child if they have anything to add.  I require narrations from all their independent readings, except for free reads…they do these at bedtime.  HTH some:)  Gina

I have them narrate from books we read for school, but not for our literature read-aloud.  That they just savor for the sake of being a good book to read.  I also don’t require narrations for their other free-reads.  We do our lit read-aloud at quiet time, so they can savor it during their rest time.  Other free-reads they read at their leisure.  I don’t read during any meals because everyone, including Mom, has their mouth full!  😛  I don’t require a narration from my almost-5yo, though I may ask her a question about it, and she’ll tell me some stuff about what I read.  Kind of “pre-narration,” if you will.  It is not required, though, even if I ask her a question.  If she doesn’t know, either one of the other kids will answer, or I will, or we’ll just move on if she’s too wiggly.  😉

Thank you Sara and Gina.  That does help.
@Sara… you’re right about Mom having her mouth full, too!  I guess that’s one way to stay thin… just read during all meal times  🙂

    Thanks, again,
    Monica
