We are doing Our Mother’s Tongue (OMT) and it’s been going well.  We are doing it orally.  I’m doing it with my 7th grade son.  We are on lesson 6 and just hit the review.

This is just a couple verses of the bible that they are to label (noun, pronoun, adj.. etc).  My son is lost.  He just can’t seem to get anything but the nouns right?

What do I do?  I do not believe it’s the approach I just think this is really hard for him.  His daily work has been really good.  He seems to have gotten it.  But this just stopped him in his tracks?  Suggestions, advice?  I don’t know what to do.  Thanks Misty

Misty, is  he finding all the nouns?  That is great.  If he misses any, I like to ask if he sees any words that are things he could pick up or touch first (if that doesn’t get them all you have to remind him that there are also abstract ones like “peace” and “kindness” and all that.)   Next have him look for words that he could substitute a noun in for–those are pronouns.  For example, if he sees “he” he could substitute “Dad” so that is a pronoun.  If he sees “they” he could substitute “my brothers”.  If he sees “it” he could substitute “the hippopotamus” or “the alien spaceship” or . . . lol.  Let him make it fun.  See if that helps him find all of those.  Then look at each noun and pronoun and have him ask “How many?  What kind? or “Which one?”  If you see words that answer those questions, you have an adjective.  “Brown” or “lazy” or “four” or “polka-dotted” or “scrofulous” or whatever.  He may need to do this with “guidance” several times and then he should be able to do that.  If you/he still need help, feel free to PM or email me and I can even discuss it over email if he likes.  I’d be happy to if it helps you out, but I think the two of you can do it.  I have the book back here by the computer if I can be of any  help!

Thanks we’ll try that tomorrow and see if that helps.  The nouns seem to be ok to great at finding.  But we’ll try that again with your hints and see how far he gets!
