Not Sure about the Two Levels Needed

I’m having a gem of a time trying to figure out which SW books I need. I have a 5th & 7th grader. I will be using SWR for spelling, but I would like to purchase SW for copywork. As I’m trying to decide, I notice that both of my dd’s grades are at the end of each level. My 4th grader does not like to write anything longer than a paragraph and she’s in the process of learning how to type. Spelling is one area that I will be focusing with my 7th grade dd.

    Grades 3, 4, 5: Book One

    Grades 5, 6, 7: Book Two

    Grades 7, 8, 9: Book Three

    Grades 9, 10, 11: Book Four

    Grades 11, 12: Book Five

    I appreciate it!

    Sharon,

Have you previously used SWR? If not, be aware that it takes quite a lot to figure out how to teach it effectively. I spent a couple of months figuring it out and 2 years using is w/ my 8 yo dd. It is a great program, but rather intensive. I’ve used almost all of the OG spelling/reading programs (Phonics Road, LEM Phonics, SWR, read through WRR) and have landed on All About Spelling b/c of it’s simplicity. I admit that there are some things I like about SWR better, but with an 8 yo, 5 yo, 2 yo and baby 4 on the way I HAD to simplify!

You may already be a seasoned SWR user and have it all down to a science, in which case, please disregard this post. I just thought I would share my experience in case you were just getting started with it.

Blessings to you in whatever you choose! BTW, I think any of the SW books would work well for copywork as there are varying lengths of quotes in each.

    HTH,

    Hi Christie!

Yes. I’ve used SWR for over 1-1/2 yrs. When I first started, the lessons were long and tedious so I took a year off. I just started it back up again. At first my girls didn’t like the program due to the length of time it took with the lessons. Based on the wisdom of one of the SWR trainers that uses a mix of CM and classical, I now shorten the lessons CM style by doing 10 words a day (40 a wk). I also do short reinforcement activities.  The only thing that may take longer are the reference pages, but I break them up into multiple days, however many days that may be.

Once my dd’s are done with the WISE Guide, I plan to do only dictations and then use SWR phonograms/rules to analyze the misspelled words.

I’ll be starting SWR with my youngest (K) in the fall. I will be keeping the lessons short and include fun activities to learn the phonograms.

    Have a blessed weekend!

    Sharon
