Today was our first day using the CM method. For Science we have the book, “Nature’s Notes”. My oldest 3 girls are grades 3,4, & 5. Someone asked me today what my 5th grader was using for Science. She said by 5th grade my daughter should know more substantial things. Things like….cells, chemicals, etc. My question is this: do I need another Science book for better teaching about these building blocks of Science?

I will be watching this thread as my daughter will be 5th next year and I am already researching… looking at Noeo. I have same question you do plus anyone use Noeo and thoughts.

As homeschoolers, we don’t have to be bound by grade levels. While it is important that our children learn about a wide variety of things, it is not so important when they learn them-especially in elementary school. Science is beefed up quite a bit in 7th grade and our children will hit all the important topics they may have missed in the younger years.

And, really, how much science do most of us remember from elementary school?Smile

The specifics of cells etc are things which come back again and again in your child’s educational experience. They will learn them when they get to middle or high school. They don’t need them now. The point of elementary science in CM is to form relationships with many things (building interests is a good way to think of it) and to develop observational skills. Next time you get criticism I suggest saying something like “Oh we think they will learn those things pretty quickly when they are older. Right now our goal is to make sure they love science and are good observers.” Btw this explanation or something similar works for other subjects too like grammar. Sometimes they can learn they same things just a lot quicker with less wasted time if you just wait a few years.

I agree with the pervious responses. Basic science concepts are repeated over and over and over. I recently took some advanced biology classes (microbiology and anatomy and physiology) and in both the first subjects covered where….. The parts of the cell, mitosis and meiosis and cellular respiration.

If you want to cover these topic then, certainly you can! But, I don’t think it’s imperative. Much more important that they learn to think, write, study, retain information. If you do want an overview of what is “generally” taught at each grade level I recommend Rebecca Rupps book “Home learning Year by Year”–just remember the progression is a suggestion not a requirement.
