My kids got an android tablet.  This is for school and games.  We live in the woods and don’t have unlimited internet so no surfing.  We went to the coffee shop downloaded some new stuff and we’re set.  Or so mom thought.

So in order to get the free games I had to log in with my account on each of the 5 (oh my) tablets.  Now my email messages pop up and calendar notification (when the wifi is off?) and I’m not liking that.  Also, when I got it all started I had to connect to our internet but now I regret that.  So I have a few questions:

    1. Is there a way so they don’t keep seeing my email/calendar?

    2. Is there a way to set up a parental password or something so that even if they try to turn the wifi back on it would ask for a password/number – something I would only know; so they can not just do things or look around without me knowing?

    3. what other apps/information would be helpful for a mom with kids having these new toys?

Just in case it matters they are nothing special just RCA Voyager 7″ 16GB tablets.

Misty – Thanks for the learning curve!

If you change your wifi router password on your pc, then when they try to connect to your wifi network the next time on their tablets, it would ask for the new password.  Just don’t give it to them.  You can leave the wifi set to automatically connect on your tablet/phone/pc but have the password characters hidden.

Although, my kids would know how to look & change that so they could view it.  That’s why they each have a separate user account on our home pc, and mine–the administrator account–has its own password that no one but I know.  And I always log off or put it on the user account screen when I am done using it so that if anyone clicks on my account icon, they would need to put in the password just to get into the administrator account….and they don’t know that password.

There’s a free app called Kids’ Place you can download and set it up so there’s no internet access and only the apps you specifically allow can be accessed from it. It can be set to start automatically when the tablet is turned on, and they can’t exit out without a password.

I am also looking for a safe app for kids for a tablet and my laptop. I tried xooloo but there ends up being a charge after 30 days.  the kids place app, can you use it on a laptop as well? how is their customer service if you need help?

If your laptop has windows 8 or 10, you can use Microsoft’s Family Safety program. It’s excellent and it’s free. We also use it on our Windows 8 tablets.
