This is my first post on this forum.  I read A Charlotte Mason Companion a few years ago and dismissed the ideas.  I thought… well… it doesn’t matter what I thought then, but now my thoughts have changed.  My children strongly dislike school.  They would rather do anything other than learn.  Their love for learning has already been squelched at the young ages of 7, 8, and 11.  What do I do?????

There is so much info on here and at the SCM site.  It is awesome!!!  I have downloaded and read a few of the books there already.  And today bought Spelling Wisdom and the Preschool book.

Any been there, done that advice?  We have been homeschooling for 4 years.  We have used limited textbooks, but still all workbooks.  And pretty much only the three r’s.  I have no copywork or dictation experience with them.

    Sorry I’m rambling.

Welcome, Nina. You will find a wealth of information and advice here. Take a deep breath and move slowly. Perhaps some of the posts related to pulling kids out of school and having a “detox” period might prove helpful.

    Blessings,

Consider taking an early Spring Break to regroup Laughing.

If your budget allows, I would strongly suggest ordering Sonya’s SCM Seminar DVD’s

They are the best thing out there for explaining how to apply the CM approach.

When we first decided to homeschool, I thought it would look just like my school experience but take place at our table instead of a classroom.  I had no idea the endless options.  My girlfriend directed me to scm and I use the curriculum guide to know what subjects to include.  I start the year by printing off the guide and then printing the recommendations for each subject.  I use some of the curriculum suggested (love 106 days and hist/geo/bible) but look all around for cm options for subjects.  SCM is great at incorporating multilple grade levels.  This forum has lead me to so many awesome resources so I would stick with reading here for options you may not even be aware of.  I think a break sounds like a great idea, for you and the kids!  Maybe a museum trip or weekend away.  The CM Seminar on dvd is fabulous and helped me really understand what this method was really all about.  Sonya explains so well.  It was my b-day gift a few years back!  And when you have questions, ask them here, everyone is so sweet and helpful.  I hardly need to ask b/c somdbody usually is asking as well and I just mooch off their answers!  Hope you have fun and seriously, take a break!

Welcome, I second the recommendations for Sonya’s DVD and all her planning materials, they are awesome, and really help put a plan into action.  I don’t have younger children, so I will let others advise you on good things to know and look at.  All I can say is the CM approach is perfect for burned out moms and children, mine came out of PS hating school, and now love it and have done well.  So big breath, relax, take a break like the other mom’s suggested and plan a new way.  If you want to keep the children ticking over, find a couple of good CM literature or history reads, and get them started on those.  Find some good copywork and let them do that.  Above all enjoy.  This is a great group and you will get more information than you know what to do with lol.
