FYI, We just released Smooth and Easy Days with Charlotte Mason as a free e-book. It’s a nice little starter to read about forming good habits. You can grab a copy at http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/smooth-easy-days-with-charlotte-mason/

What a neat little ebook.  Thanks so much for making it available for free – it is a really good little book packed with information from what I have glanced at.  Thanks Sonya and Doug.

Doug just fixed the problem so the link should work now.

I just finished reading through this and am trying to decide if I should invest in Laying Down the Rails or the Laying Down the Rails workshop.

Any thoughts from those of you who own LDTR?

My situation – I’m a homeschooling mom of 5 (so far).  We use primarily unit studies, though I enjoy reading some of Charlotte Mason’s books and we are probably moving toward CM a bit over time.  My children are 8yo girl, 5yo boy, 4yo girl, 2yo boy, 10 month old boy.  I know there are a few basic habits that need attention in my home.  The ones that jump out at me to start with (yes, I know I’ll have to choose one…:) )  are:

    – obedience the first time

    – a habit related to continual asking the same question/whining for something – any ideas?

Those are the two that stand out.  While I think I can get started with just this new e-book Smooth and Easy Days, would LDTR or the workshop of LDTH give me more specific tools/plan of action?

By all means, invest in it.  It’s one of the best investments I’ve made in our homeschool and we’re in our 14th year.  I’m going through it with highlighter in hand.  I love that it’s organized by types of habits such as decency and propriety, mental, physical, etc.  Each habit has everything Charlotte wrote about developing that habit.  There are also chapters that tell how to deal with bad habits such as lying, dawdling, etc.  It’s a meaty book that gives much wisdom and encouragement.  When I first got it I thought it would be overwhelming but as I read it, I realize the establishing these habits in my children (and myself!!!) will be freeing.

Tristan, you chose a couple excellent habits to start with. If you cover obedience, attentiveness, and truthfulness then so many other things fall into place much easier.

RobinP is right about it looking a little overwhelming at first. The book is kind of thick but it’s designed to be used a little at a time. The first section explains habit training then bulk of the book is a reference on specific habits. So once you read the first part you can just refer to the part on the specific habit you are working on at the time.

Many thanks to you all at SCM for the e-book!

Tristan, I received LDTR as a birthday gift last April and like that it is in-depth.  I so appreciate the detail in this handbook as well as having everything CM said on cultivating habits all in one place.  I chose to start with the habit of ‘kindness’ over the summer (that includes myself and the kids).  Term 1 we worked on instilling habits of thankfulness and prayer.  This term it is the habit of self-control.

As for the dvd, I invested in it a few months ago. I must say it is a real treat for me to be able to “attend” a workshop – even if it is in the comfort of my own home after everyone else is in bed 🙂

    Tristan,

I have both now, but I did just have the DVD at first; and it was great! Very informative and helpful, but it did make me want to buy the book, which is why I did. Doug is right about it seeming a little daunting at first, but it’s still wonderful. It invokes such a mindset of simplicity in me, and we’re on Day 3 and already seeing progress. I started with the habit of obedience. I’m still having to give little reminders to the kids, but I find myself being so much more gentle than I was before. If you do buy the handbook, get the e-download and print it off yourself and save money that way!

    Doug and SCM Team,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The free e-book was fantastic. I read the whole thing in about 30 minutes. Thanks for writing it, Sonya. And thanks for making it free! It’s such a great thing to read before starting Laying Down The Rails. You’re the best!
