We’ve been very busy rolling out upgrades to the CM Organizer and CM Bookfinder over the last few weeks. Here is a brief summary of the recent changes. As always, we’re eager to hear your feedback on the new features and other suggestions you may have.

Shared tagging—Now everyone can add tags to any resource, even on resources you didn’t enter. Those tags are then visible to everyone. Each tag has a link that shows all of the resources assigned that tag, which is a great way to share groups of resources with each other. Resources can also be found in search by their tags. The CM Organizer home page displays the top 40 most used tags so popular tags should appear there automatically.

We think tags are a great way to describe or group resources by things like subject (e.g., “history”), event (e.g., “Civil War”), part of a curriculum or series (e.g., “Math U See”), or just about anything else. We hope tags will be a great way for our little community to share in making the resources we list easier to find and even more useful.

Public sharing checkbox—There is now a checkbox on resources you add to allow that resource to be shared publicly. We encourage you to start marking resources you’ve entered as shared even though they won’t show up for everyone right now. When we finish the sharing feature then these resources will be available for everyone to use. Of course, resources you don’t mark as shared will remain private.

This feature along with tags will be a great way for groups of CM Organizer users to work together to add resources and categorize them. Maybe there’s a niche curriculum a few of you use and we haven’t entered the needed resources into the Organizer. Now you have a way to collaborate on that work. Feel free to use the forum as a way to coordinate your efforts.

Redesigned search listings and resource details—The design is a little cleaner and clearer, and hopefully easier to find what you want. Tags are now displayed and we switched to more obvious buttons for scheduling, Amazon lookup, etc.

Improved historical settings—Entering and searching on year ranges for historical settings is much improved.

Little Tweaks—We’ve made a whole bunch of small tweaks and bug fixes that should make using the Organizer and even more pleasant experience.

Doug, 1st I hope your family vacation went well and you are well rested!  2nd way to go and THANKS, I can’t wait to start to see and use these in the next 2 weeks when we start school.  The SCM family is always outdoing this organizer and I can’t thank you enough for the time you save me through out the year!  Blessings Misty

    Hi Doug, welcome back!

I love the new features, but have one little question. For resources that we’ve already entered (Teaching Textbooks math 4, for example), how do we get the numbered divisions to stop appearing? I went in and edited the resource, deleting the #s and it saved appropriately, but it didn’t change in our scheduler or daily plan. It still shows Assignment 32 – Lesson 30 (or something along those lines.). However, in the resource it simply shows Lesson 30. Am I making sense? If so and you can give me a pointer or two, that’d be great!

Thanks for making the best site and tools even better!

Thanks all. We had a nice time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula relaxing by a quiet inland lake. It was a pleasant opportunity to spend time with friends, listen to loons, and see a bald eagle that was nesting nearby.

Christie, I’m checking into dealing with division changes for resources you’ve already scheduled. I’ll let you know when I know more.

Well, I jumped the gun on announcing the combined division numbers and titles. We’re working on that feature and we’ve been testing it but it’s not quite ready and hasn’t been rolled out yet. Sorry for any confusion. I’ve edited the post above to take that part out.

Maybe I needed to stay on vacation a bit longer. 🙂

I want to use a resource for Italic Handwriting that has numbered lessons with an ocassional “practice” lesson that is not numbered. With the new system, my lesson numbers are fine until I get to the first Practice lesson. What will the system accept as a lesson number? Does it have to be numeric, or can it be something like “Practice 1”? How about something like 1-5 to indicate a chapter 1/section 5, or maybe 1.5 for the section number?

The resource doesn’t mind having “Practice” as the lesson number for those ocassional lessons, but the scheduler won’t let me schedule just that lesson. Is this related to your issue that you just posted about?

Once we get the new division numbering feature finished and rolled out it will accept anything you want. It will then allow you to choose your divisions from a list so a number range isn’t needed. Of course, if they are not numeric then the schedule won’t be able to show a numeric range such as “complete chapters 1-5.” Instead it would say something like “complete 5 chapters.”

I LOVE the new tagging feature. This will help so much in the planning. Thank you for making such an awesome resource!

Christie, I’m in the process of tagging all the books used in the history modules. I think we discussed that earlier, so just wanted to let you know. Smile
