  • My son just finishe first grade and I’m seriously considering homeschooling using this method. Can I use traditional math and phonics and still use the CM method for everything else ? Any advice would be appreciated , I’ve never homeschooled much less any non traditional method . I’m very excited about pursuing the CM method of homeschooling . Please fill me in on anything I should read or know .

    Thanks

    Kassey 🙂

Yes, you can do traditional math, and phonics.

In fact, it is your homeschool – you can do anything you want! (well, within whatever requirements your government sets out…)

Actually, most CM based curriculums (like the free curriculum guide here) recommend you pick your own preference for a math program (they often recommend one as their preference above the others…) – and many do the same for reading instruction…

I’d read these, and others from the series page, before I buy any other reading….

Thanks so much ! I Live in Texas and I’m pretty sure the laws about homeschooling ate relaxed here, but I will investigate . I will check out the links . What does a typical day look like ? How long does the school day last etc.?

Sorry for the typos I’m on my cell phone.

You can take just about anything and make it fit into CM methods. That’s the beauty of this method is that it’s so forgiving, so laid back, and allows you to tailor everything to fit your needs.

I have an almost 8yo and a 9yo. Our school day is 2-2.5 hours four days per week, yearround. Our typical day starts with bed-making, devotions, and breakfast. Then we move up to the school room. Both kids are able to do copywork, most math, reading, and geography independently. We read history and Bible and literature as a family. My son is the only one doing typing, dictation, and oral narrations, so his day is usually a bit longer than his younger sister’s, by about 30 minutes.

Btw, I’m in TX too! Whereabouts are you??

Beamont Texas 🙂 I’m so excited about starting this adventure in the fall . 🙂

Just curious why you chose to do year round school vs having Summer off?
