Hey!! I am the mom of thre awesome kiddos..my dd1 is almost nine and has just finished her 3rd grade year in ps. We will start to hs in the fall and want to do it the CM way πŸ™‚ I thought I had it all figured out but I got her the book Misty from Chincoteague to read for summer reading and she is totally bored…we are coming from reading stuff like Junie B Jones..gah, I know..total trash. My dd is super smart and an excellent reader..she placed in the 5th grade level this year…I guess what I’m trying to say is..are there any other good books that are written in a more modern tone? I have the entire narnia series in the attic b/c I loved them as a girl…she is going to read those in the fall…I want her to love learning but I don’t want to force her to read stuff she doesn’t like. am I right?!

The rest of you are free to disagree with me on this-I’m a newbie, too, so most of my book selections come from my background as a librarian. I would recommend your daughter try:

The Ramona books by Beverly Cleary

Because of Winn Dixie by Kate diCamillo (not sure of the exact grade level on this one)

The Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder (if she hasn’t already)

Anything by EB White (Charlotte’s Web, etc.)

Those books sound much more like her style! She has read three of the Little House books actually..so, do these count as “living” books? Meaning we can use them as literature?

    Cookie3,

I hope your daughter has a good transition to the CM gentle education approach. It might take a bit of trial and error at first but never fear, we are all here to help support and encourage one another! Blessings to you, I’m sure you’ll do great!

The one thing I didn’t know way back when I pulled one of our daughter’s out of public school is to expect a time of transition ~ big transition. In some places I have even heard it described as “detoxing”.

This summer I would try different books, read aloud snuggly time or out under a tree and just gently ease your way into “good books” together. Honey for a Child’s Heart has many many suggestions and you are sure to find books she can learn to enjoy independently and together as read alouds.

You are going to do great and have lots of fun along the way.

I would second the Little House series and the EB White books, Cookie3. They are definitely living books written in good style. You can find more suggestions in the Literature section of our curriculum guide and by searching the CM Bookfinder for Leisure Reading or Literature.

Don’t worry too much about what grade level is listed at this point. Your daughter will need some time to develop a taste for the good stuff. She’s used to the “bubble gum” books that don’t require much effort to read. You’re right to look for good “nutritious” books that she will also find “delicious” during this transition time. Besides, a good living book is usually interesting to any age. πŸ™‚

Welcome Cookie3, You are in for a blessing with having your dd at home with you. Even if the transition is tough it is well worth the work.

I second all the book suggestions above and then add The Tale of Despereaux. We are just starting this as a read aloud and I love the way the author draws you in. I think there is a movie about it —Oh I just asked my kids and yes there is a movie..and they have already seen it πŸ˜₯ I wasn’t wanting them to see it until after we read it..Darn those other family members who show movies to my kiddos!! Anyway the book is starting out well so I thought I would mention it.

    Blessings,

    Shelly

    Thanks so much πŸ™‚

She actually has gotten about 4 chapters into the book and is enjoying it now!! Yay!!

Sonya thanks so much for explaining the books as “nutritious” I haven’t thought of it that way before..my dd loves to eat nutritious foods and I am very hopeful that she will also love to read things nutritious for her mind!

Can I ask another question here? She will be a 4th grader in the fall and we are following the curriculum guide for 4th grade pretty strictly…does anyone think that we are biting off too much for our first homeschool year? I thought we would go ahead and start our book of mottoes and she is already doing narration..should we jump in full steam or just do the basics (math spelling literature science) this fall?
