I am needing some help with Language Arts for our next school year!  First of all, next school year will be our first year doing Charlotte Mason homeschooling.  I am excited but have had a hard time deciding about what to use for Language Arts.

My oldest is 9 and will be in 4th grade.  For the last few years, we have used Learning Language Arts through Literature.  I am thinking about switching but not sure.  What do you use for 4th grade?  I will also have two 1st graders, ages 6 and 7.  I am currently going through Teaching Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons.  One of my 1st graders has special needs and will definitely need more work with reading.  I am going to do Delightful Reading with her. I am wondering if  l I need to go to Delightful Reading after finishing 100 Easy Lessons or continue on to a Child’s Copybook Reader for my other daughter?  Do I just let her read and learn new words through reading?  With my oldest daughter, we went through a phonics program for the first few years so it feels strange not doing that.  However, I am open to changing, I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing.  I have heard of these different Language Arts programs: Simply Grammar, Delightful Reading, Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons, English for the Thoughtful Child, and then of course Learning Language Arts through Literature, which is what we’ve been using.  I am curious if anyone has any input on these programs and when to start them or when NOT to start them! 🙂    I hope all this makes sense!  Any help or advice would be appreciated!  Thank you!

We used All About Readings volumes 1 through 3 along with Pathway Readers and I thought that was perfect.  My sons struggled with beginning reading and now are rather solid 3rd grade readers.  I have recently gotten Logic of English bc I want to go through it all again in a deeper way for 4th grade.  They are both suspected to have dyslexia and I think the phonics has been really helpful for them.

We are trying Character Qualities Language Arts next year, except for the spelling part. For that we are trying Spelling You See.

That said with CM in 4th grade some just use narration,  copywork,  etc.

For reading lessons,  it really depends on the child and mom. All About Reading is my backup plan, if my dd likes lots of rules. So far she is only interested in games, so I am trying Ring Around the Phonics.

There are many good phonics programs out there. Reading Reflex is another of my favorites. Each child may have a strong preference for reading lessons and materials.

I also got Spelling You See for my 1st grader.  She likes copywork,  so I am using it for the writing(copywork ) and phonics aspects. I will not require it daily.

I am having technical difficulties and cannot start new topics. So, I am putting this on here, hoping someone will answer. I was wondering if anyone has used Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind. I looked at some samples, but wondered what others thought of it.

I used the old edition, when Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 were in the same hardcover book.  I really liked it for my 1st daughter, when she was in 1st and 2nd grade — we sat on the couch and I read and she parroted back.  They teach a really neat hand jive that we still use to remember the helping verbs.  We didn’t find their preposition jive nearly as helpful  (because we just don’t get it! *L*).

It can be done all conversationally – all writing prompts are optional.  There are some copying exercises, I mostly skipped those because we had covered them earlier.

With my next three daughters, I haven’t used it very much at all……Mostly because I’m busier now!  All of the girls know the helping verb hand jive because we still quote it occasionally.

I really think I’m going to just not bother with any kind of grammar for my youngest two until they’re in 4th grade or so.  And then, I think I’ll use Easy Grammar and supplement with a diagramming workbook.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks! I am going to try using level 2 this fall. My daughter is older, but has some learning disabilities. I think the format will be good for her before she gets into more written work. The ‘jives’ will probably help her:)
