My six year old just finished RightStart Math Level B (hurray!) but I don’t think he he quite ready for C. He is pretty good at math but has a short attention span. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

One thing you might do before changing from RightStart is to call the company with your concerns about his level and moving to C. Their customer service is really good.

We like Rod and Staff math for the early years. I purchase it from http://www.milestonebooks.com/list/Mathematics_for_Christian_Living_Series/?offset=10

Well, I don’t know if this makes a difference, but RightStart C does a LOT of review at the start…. going through the addition strategies again…

I did take another look at RightStart C this evening and it does a good review at the beginning. Then it goes in to adding in the thousands, intro to Multiplication, etc. I’m just not sure about that but it might be worth a try. We can always switch books later if needed.

I just talked with a RS representative at the homeschool convention. I asked about the seemingly huge leaps that RS makes and she said to pay special attention to whether the instructions say it is an introduction or a concept to be mastered. Many times they put something there to challenge the student and introduce the concept. Then they will come back to it in later lessons.

Also, many kids take 1.5 years, or even 2 to do level c and that is fine. Play lots of games. We are not quite to the mid-year test ourselves.

Agreeing to play lots of math games. Maybe you can alternate a math lesson day with a math game day. Their intro. to multiplication is skip counting. He already skip counts by 2, 5, &10, right? So now they are trying to master by 3 & 4. 6-9 are conceptual at first and you could just help him more with those. Otherwise they are working on subtraction mastery (play more math games) and some geometry with shapes and measuring perimeter. We are at lesson 60 of level C.

Thank you for all of the encouragement to stick with RightStart. I think we might do that after all. I know it isn’t quite CM, but we might also work on math facts some during the summer because he is still calculating all of the basic facts and maybe working on doing them more quickly will help him when he gets to the larger addition problems and subtraction.
