Is anyone else using this curriculum?  I’m planning to use it with our 1st and 2nd grader starting in a couple of weeks.  How much or how little did you do or are you doing?    I was very excited about my history and Bible plan aside from Galloping the Globe, but my kids are begging me to use Galloping the Globe so I’m trying to fit it in.  I’m having trouble narrowing it down and I’m getting very bogged down with lesson planning.  They’re primarily interestd in geography and animals.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, Melissa

Do you already own it? I was in the same spot with my children (who were 10 and 8 at the time), but they quickly burned out on it because it was just too many worksheets. I was also, as you say, bogged down. I tried to make it work because I purchased it and they had asked for it, but eventually I had to pitch it. I have found that my littles much more enjoy reading through those big atlases that have a bit about each country, including the wildlife. Some have projects. Also, Material World has been a hit with the children. I skim for the littles, and the olders like to have all the stats. We sometimes find a recipe to make and that’s always fun. I have found that the younger ones are not really able to digest and retain the learning they are doing via so many worksheets.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks Cindy!

Yes, we do own it.   We also own Material World and our kids love it.  Thanks for mentioning it, maybe I can incorporate it somehow.  Here’s my latest plan.  We’re going to spend two weeks per country, which will take us 2 years to get through the entire book.   I’ve decided to try it and if it’s too much, we’ll just move on.

    Monday

             Locate continent/country on map

             Read –

             Color and label map

    Monday

             Review country

             Vocabulary

             Literature –

    Tuesday

             Children Just Like Me

             Color flag

             Missionary

    Tuesday

             Animals

             Missionary

             Worksheet

    Wednesday

             Read –

             Geographic features

             Map data box

    Wednesday

             Literature –

             Activity

             Bible verse

    Thursday

             Missionary

             Animals

             Worksheet

    Thursday

             Animals

             Worksheet

             Literature –

    Friday

             Read –

             Bible verse/copywork

    Friday

             Animal report

             Make a meal

I cut this from a table within a Word document so it looks like it grouped the days together instead of dividing into two weeks.  Anyway, the first Monday, Tues, Wed, etc.  would be the 1st week, the 2nd Mon, Tues, Wed, etc, would be the 2nd week.

I’m still open to any other suggestions/discussion.  Blessings, Melissa

This sounds like fun, Melissa. Keep in mind too, for those weeks when you just don’t have the ability to follow through, travel videos! I’m beginning to think I have a new favorite thing!

We used it and LOVED it. We NEVER did worksheets. We made lapbooks, 1 per country. We loosely followed a 2 week schedule per country, but that’s because we tied it into the FIAR curriculum and did 1 week of FIAR with a book from that country and then did 1 week learning about the country. We made a lapbook for the country, dressed up as if we lived in the country, made a meal from the country, studied a mammal from the country, and read a traditional “tale” of some sort from the country.

We hung a flag up from the country as well as a map of the country so we could easily see every place we read about. 😀 I have very fond memories of this curriculum.

Oh, and you could also google Galloping The Globe notebooking pages. There’s a homeschool blogger out there who did/does this with her kids. She has a really simple schedule she used/ing with them and a few freebies to go with it. 😀

AussieMommy, were you referring to the notebooking pages and maps from Jolanthe at http://www.homeschoolcreations.com?

CindyS, Travel videos are a good idea too!  We enjoy the Rick Steves travel shows on PBS.  http://www.ricksteves.com/

AussieMummy, I actually DESPISE worksheets, but my kids saw the crossword puzzles, word searches, etc. in the book and are begging to do them.  I view it as busy work and rather envisioned creating lapbooks/notebooking instead.  I’ve put together a binder/notebook for each child divided by continents.  My hope is to focus on the map work and color the flag for each country.  Then let the kids chose between “worksheet” or lapbook.  I found some fun lapbook/notebook stuff on http://www.homeschoolshare.com/   I created the loose schedule thinking once we get into it, we’ll find our grove of what works best.  I also have the FIAR books and plan to incorporate them where I’ve noted “literature”.

It’s kinda funny….we’re currently using Outdoor Secrets, which I had rearranged the order to make the lessons fit WI seasons.  Anyway, the week we’re doing the apple tree lessons in OS, happened to be the same time I’d scheduled reading “How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World” for GTG.  Which also, coincides with Level 1 Pearables Home Economics for Homeschoolers, where our daugher is “learning how to peel”.  We’re planning to make apple pies.   I just love it when all the subjects mesh like that.  It feels like it’s really the right thing to be doing.  Laughing

Nerakr, the Jolanthe website has a ton of great stuff!  I recommend it if anyone else is planning to use GTG.

    Blessings,

    Melissa
