Next year I will have a 3rd grader and a K’er with a 3 year old tagging along (and a new baby-eek!). I love the idea of living books for science, but I am trying to not overcommit with plans for next school year. I am already planning on doing my own thing for history, and I had been thinking of doing my own thing for science as well, but am starting to re-evaluate. I am wondering whether anyone has used the NaturExplorers units as a whole science curriculum for their elementary students? My kids love nature study! I also don’t want to be super tied down to something set for science because I often tend to improvise. This year we did Outdoor Secrets and I ended up supplementing and going on tangents a lot. But it was nice to have a starting base to work from.
I was looking at the “botany bundle” which includes 5 of the ebooks. Is that enough? DS has also said he wants to learn about dinosaurs so we will be doing a little unit study on that as well. I would add in an independent reading book on each topic for him to read and narrate on his own. My K’er and I are planning to read CLP Nature Reader book 1 together next year too. Thoughts?
mama_nicklesParticipantbumping this up to see if anyone will reply?
missceegeeParticipantI have seen but haven’t used these. Outdoor Secrets and Companion was our fave! Next year I’m using SCM’s new Pond and Stream Companion for science for my third grader and K kid. I love having the spine book and the supplemental books/activities planned, but still super simple. Can’t wait! Maybe that’s an option if the Nature Explorers isn’t what you’re looking for.
Amandadixon22ParticipantI am wanting to use the Naturexplorers for our upcoming school year as well. There are not a ton of sample pages that I can find, so I’m a little nervous as how these actually look. I see this post is 7 months back…did you end up going with these? If so, how do you like it? Any details you might could add? We LOVE doing nature study, but I do need some help with starting lessons and info about what we’re studying would be ideal! thankyou fo any input!!!

mama_nicklesParticipantSorry I didn’t reply earlier. I didn’t end up using NaturExplorers. I have been doing living books (we liked several by Glenn Blough) and I have been loosely doing nature study following “Exploring Nature with Children.” I am planning to do living books again next school year. I have realized that my kids really like the living books that have a story with them. So we just recently started Owls in the Family and it’s good so far!
