How do I go about making a nature notebook? My kids are 13,11,9,and 5.

In case you’re interested, these are some fun nature notebook print pages I found on-line.  I especially like the tanglewood one for the younger ones (an e-file for very cheap).

donnayoung.org  (go into their science and then nature journal tab)  FREE pages to print

tanglewoodeducation.com  (go into their ‘how to order’ tab at the top)

The basic thing about the nature notebook is that it’s something you make yourself and it’s about nature. What you do from there is up to you.

You can include drawings, comments about the weather, notes about the scenery or subject matter, poetry, etc. Or just leave the drawings without any additions to the page. Whatever suits your fancy!

We prefer to draw on single sheets of paper and then paste them into a nature book later, adding captions and other notes. Other people draw directly on their nature journal pages (my kids found that too intimidating and felt a pressure to be perfect on every page).

The other basic thing is to have fun. If your drawings are awkward and funny at the beginning, that’s okay! Have fun with it and keep it up. It’s really one of the best learning tools I’ve encountered, and it’s a treasure to keep.

Thanks for the help. I’m making things so much more difficult than they need to be. I was looking at purchasing a book but the one I found was $18 plus shipping and I need 5 of them so I think it’s better to pass on that and make our own. I’m so excited about getting started on the notebook. I think the kids are going to love it and this year is going to be great!! So much better than the boaring textbooks we’ve been using..

    Just an FYI…

If you go to http://www.rainbowresource.com type in notesketch, and it will bring up different sizes of these notebooks.  These are excellent for nature notebooks.  On this website, they are the least expensive you’ll find too.  My girls and I have used these for the last two years and love them.  We use watercolor pencils on them too.  The paper is a high quality paper that can take this without soaking through or tearing.  They are spiral bound with a nice strong tagboard cover too.  Check them out.  They work great!
