Why do we include the Latin word with the English word? Is there an appropriate age for this?

Because a great many species have more than one English name and it is quite unclear what is meant.  When your children learn taxonomic classification.

In addition to what Bookworm said, the Latin names are universal. They are the same no matter what country you are from, making it clearer what organism is being studied.

A good example of a common name being used for several organisms is hemlock. There are several totally different plants that are commonly called hemlock. One is a tree, another is a shrub, and another is a plant related to carrots.
