I was recently inspired after reading Charlotte’s Homeschooling Series Vol. 3 to look on-line at the Universal Library for some of the authors she mentions in regards to nature study and music study.  I was very delighted to find a list of books by Eliza Brightwen and A. Buckley, both whom Charlotte referenced in her 3rd volume.

These books are no longer in copyright and have been scanned in by different libraries.  You can download them as PDFs and some can be read on-line or downloaded as text files.

This link is to the list of Nature study books by Eliza Brightwen: If clicking on the link doesn’t work then copy and paste it into your browser

You will need to scroll down the list until you find her titles,  The Fairyland of Science and Life and Her Children.

Finally, I want to share that I was looking for some help in teaching my children Sol-Fa.  Charlotte mentioned a book by a Mr. John Curwin titled, The standard course of lessons and exercises in the tonic sol-fa method of teaching music : (founded on Miss Glover’s “Scheme for rendering Psalmody Congregational,” 1835) : with additional exercises (1892)

Again, I was able to locate this book on-line at the Universal Library.  Below is the link to that resource…

Anyway, I thought I’d pass these latest “finds” along…. I always enjoy a good resource that is FREE!!! πŸ™‚

Wow, their writing is so beautiful! I read about both of them that they were big fans of Darwin and that Buckley was able to put Darwin’s ideas into language that children could understand. How steeped is her writing with evolution, does anyway know? Just wondering. I’m sure that I have to have the book “The Fairly land of Science”! The first page was so good. It is very late though and so I have to get off this computer and go to bed. :o)
