How do you encourage this? All of my “school” ages right now are all boys!!! They love to be outside and the love to take walks but how do encourage them to keep a notebook? What do you put in your notebooks? Do you just draw what you see? Do you pick something and tape it in? Do you label it?

You would think after schooling in a CM fashion for this many years I would have a better idea about this.

    HI Shanna,

My son is good about it, he just goes in waves. What I’ve done is been real specific. Prior to our walk or “going outside” (we’re real informal) I say that they are going to draw in their notebooks one thing so keep an eye out for what they would like to draw and discover! Then when we come in we immediately get the drawing/coloring tools (their notebooks are already on the table) along with the guide of whatever it is they’re drawing. They like to use the guides to make the drawing as exact as possible; it may not be ‘drawing’ upon their memory, but my son’s real ‘A’ type about it looking right. I figure, at least they are learning about whatever it is whether they use strictly their memory or the guide; wwither way it stays in theri memory accurately.

anyway, They also must write what it is and when and where they saw it, minimum.

I use the paper with half blank/half lines.

My friend had a son who was stumped as what to look for and draw ans he received encouragement and dirction from “My Nature Journal”

They can also just jot down a line or two about what they saw and where, or what the weather was like, or how something has changed during this season. The nature notebook can include writing as well as sketches or paintings or specimens. Some days it may be just one line; other days it may be three or four lines of writing and a sketch.

How often do you work on your nature notebook?

Charlotte’s students did nature study one afternoon a week.

    Once a week, scheduled.

However, during the Spring and Summer, there are spontaneous times.
