I’m wondering how often narrations should be given by the child.  Like, once a day on varying subjects, or for each subject, or once a week for each subject, or what?

There is loads of info available on the how of narration, but I’ve yet to find this answer and hoped that some of you ladies who read CMs works more diligently than I can help me out.

As nearly as I can tell, Charlotte had her students narrate every book they read during the day. Now, depending on the ages of your children, that might be 2 books up to 4 or 5 books each day. And those book readings were spread out and interspersed with other types of subjects that didn’t require narrations. They weren’t all bunched together in consecutive time slots.

I’ve talked to CM moms all across the spectrum. Some require their children to narrate every book they read every day. Others require only certain books throughout the week, like maybe only the History books or only the Science books.

    How’s that for a non-answer? Wink

I imagine it also depends on the age of the child.  With my teens they do short written narrations without looking at the book after their history, geography, government readings.  In their literature readings, they narrate to me and/or they write various essay types like compare and contrast, or review type writing.   I have found this works quite well, and with the history it gives them a nice notebook of information in chronological order.  We do lots of discussions now as well, which are less narration and more opinion based.  It is nice that we can all make the choice as to what works best with our individual children based on Charlotte Mason and her recommendations.

Sonya, your “non-answer” is perfect.  It’s as though you just gave me permission to mull this over, then go with what I feel is right for my children.  I love the way you inspire all of us to have confidence in how we are implementing our home education!
