We will begin CM soon and I am still not quite clear on narration? What books do they narrate? I thought that I was going to be doing the reading literature aloud to them and they would narrate back to me what “I” read.. But I’m reading posts that are talking about them narrating back what they read. I’m confused. What type of readings are we supposed to do?? They have their free reading list, right? Then we have the books that are required for our history module, They will be reading their science lesson (Rainbow Science. Then we have our literature selection.. Do I read the literature selection to them? Do they read their free reading selection to me? Should we have readers specifically for narration?? My kids are 7th,6th,4th,and K. I’m just trying to sort this all out so I can start on our schedule. We are schooling through the summer and I would like to start narration now as part of my “ease into CM” plan. Thanks for your help

You can look on the main site for narration ideas for your children. Everybody will have their children narrate different books in different areas of subject. I have 5 children ages 15 to 5. I have the younger ones narrate back what I have read to them. The older children will narrate their independant readings to me.

I like how one mother refered to narration as the “wrapping it up” part of their education(read somewhere here! :). You could have them narrate the literature reading maybe daily or on certain days of the week and have them narrate their history or science independant readings on others.

Be sure to look at http://simplycharlottemason.com/timesavers/narration/

Youy can use these ideas for your children to keep narration fresh and fun. 😀

To me every reading should be narrated. If we read as a family then they never know who will be asked to narrate. It can seem overwhelming to figure out how to have every child narrate every reading. But, remember that the older ones should be doing written narrations also. So choose a book that will be for written narration and have them give their written turned in by end of week.

Free reading is just that…free. No narration is asked for but if it is given dont stop them. I also do not normally have them read their free reading to me.

As for literature. My oldest has a literature book he is required to read on his own and narrate. Then we have a family read aloud literature book that the whole family narrates from.

    HTH!!
