Is Mystery of History CM? Looks pretty good just wondering if it would be more challenging for my high schooler? Has anyone used it?
missceegeeParticipantI haven’t used it, but have looked it over. I know many who like it, but I thought it skimmed through history really fast which is sort of the opposite of what I want.
Alicia HartParticipantI thought seriously about using this at one point, but decided that all of the extras in it were not really necessary for our family;however, I think that there are others on this forum who use it and really enjoy it.
jotawattParticipantWe were using MOH volume 1 last year with my 5th and 6th grade children when I started learning about CM. I was able to drop some of what we were doing (note cards, quizzes) and start teaching my children to narrate using the book. It actually worked very well for us. I can’t speak to the other volumes, but the lessons of the first volume were short and interesting enough to make for good narrating. We were already doing a timeline in book form, which is similar to a Book of Centuries.
That said, having learned what I’ve learned about CM since then, I wouldn’t use it alone. It would make a decent spine, but I’d add in the living books that really help the kids form connections with what they’re learning — a la SCM. You could get a list of books to use with that time period from the curriculum guides, but if I was going to do that, personally I’d just go whole hog with SCM. We’re doing one of the modules this year, and I really REALLY love it. I do highly recommend them. 🙂
petitemomParticipantWe did Volume 1 and almost finshed Volume 2. I did really like it. We did the note cards and time line.
I added living books that went along the time periods we were studying, that’s what my kids enjoyed the most!
It does cover A LOT! I don’t know how much they will retain in the end but I do some of the quizzes to see how much they remember and sometimes I am pleasently surprised!
Switching to SCM modules next year…
albanyaloeParticipantI am glad that you asked this. I have looked at it so many times. It looks to me like it sweeps through history a bit too fast for my liking. I am interested reading these comments, thank you.
HarterhouseParticipantMy 11 and 13 year olds are reading and writing narrations on the handy downloadable notebook pages 3x a week. They love the brevity and subject matter of the readings. Linda Hobar is very passionate about history from a biblical perspective. I trust what they’re reading.
The kids don’t do any of the extras in the book. For a highschooler you might could increase the quantity of reading assignments. There are great extra literature suggestions in the back of the book.
