Has anyone used The Mystery of History cirriculum by Linda Lacour Hobar or know anything about it?

It is good material in the narrative, but it went so fast that I couldn’t even remember what the lessons were about.  We had a really hard time keeping up.

I agree with Heather’s observation. It’s also told in chatty tones, not always the best writing, and is a very surface level telling of the different subjects. It’s like someone condensed a textbook and “told” it to you, but it is not at all a story. One thing I was noticing, looking through volume 3 (on loan) is that the author makes a lot of value judgments and “connects” the dots for the child; it occured to me then that I think CM wanted children to read things told in story form, and then connect the dots and make their own judgments as they learn and grow.

My kids were young when we did MOH Vol. I.  I remember thinking it was interesting, but it moved from topic to topic so quickly that a lot was covered, but none of us remember much:)  Gina

There are discussions, if you want to look them up, that cover MOH. We used it for 11 lessons and just couldn’t do it anymore. I recollect 2, maybe 3 of the lessons, but without living books (I think she recommends some in the back of the book along with other activities), I/we just can’t remember what it’s all about.

I much prefer SCM modules and using other books, like MOH, for reference only. At this point, I can’t imagine using anything other than the SCM modules for history and if I felt the need to add something in, I can.

We used MOH 1 and MOH 2 for 2 years consecutively. I concur with the others’ thoughts. Just too fast and not enough living book suggestions to use with it (or time built in either).

Comparing to SCM modules, for me there is no comparison. I love that the modules tell me what to read and how much when (or to assign the same to children).

I am selling my volumes 1 and 2 though if anyone is interested. I kept them for a while as they are great reference tools, but I need the bookshelf space (and can use the cash for more used living books). Laughing

I heard a lot of good things about it and decided to give it a try this year. Hoping I have a better experience w/it than some of you did!! I will be using Winter’s promise books as they have a program w/MOH and I really liked all the books in their program this year (we did children around the world).

I bought it a couple of years ago and didn’t get past the first chapter.  I was disappointed as I was hoping for something more scholarly and it read more like a homeschool mom’s blog post.

Thank you all for your opinions. I think you may have just convinced me to continue with SCM modules. My oldest is in 1st grade and we made it through about 80 lessons this year. She remembers a lot (and so do I!!!) but often it is difficult to get through the commentary reading with a 2 & 4 y/o also. I am slightly concerned about the 6 year cycle (& we didn’t make it through the 1styear in1stgrade) since most schools I hear do a 4 year cycle. I thought my daughter would like the activities in MOH but I already feel like we have a full load and that would be one more thing to DO & get supplies for, etc. (We totally skipped Letters from Egypt, it was good info but way too much for now.) My daughter actually seems to really enjoy the commentary, but I worry–this is going to sound like I don’t think the Bible it the single most important book, but I do–but I worry that we are covering so much Bible in that the commentary is awesome at covering what we just read in the Bible very thoroughly, but is it covering the enough”history” that they should know. (Maybe that will shift in future modules?) I know my personality, and I need to probably stop worrying & just stick with what we are doing, which is almost exactly what the SCM curriculum guide says…but it helps to hear other’s experiences & save myself from the worry. I got the MOH Vol. 1 on loan from the library & initially it looks interesting, and it seems to cover a lot of stuff even more than SCM module 1 but sounds like it lacks depth from what you all have said…I also know that my daughter is in 1st grade & I shouldn’t worry…but I am not a trained teacher & while I am honored to have the priveledge of homeschooling I likely take the responsibility too seriously & over worry that I am giving her a good education & over schedule…these forums are SO helpful to me & I can’t thank those of you enough who take time to help & give opinions!!!! Thanks again!!!!
