I am requiring my DD’s read different types of books this summer. I have numerous categories and one of them is mystery. However, I don’t have any. The only ones I can think of are Nancy Drew. Are these good? Is there anything else out there that would be good quality, but not full of ghosts & goblins?
I’m looking in the 3rd-6th grade level…thanks in advance.
nerakrParticipantI don’t know anything about these, but there’s a thread here on the Happy Hollisters series.
With the Nancy Drew, I’d say if the title doesn’t give reference to ghosts, etc, then read the summary before letting your daughter read them. Stay away from the Nancy Drew Files series. They’re written for teenagers and have Nancy engaging in some “questionable behavior” with her boyfriend.
Most of the Boxcar Children books are mysteries. Depending on her reading level, they may or may not be too easy for the 3rd grader. Also look for the older version of the Bobbsey Twins. (The newer paperbacks are very twaddly). The Trixie Belden books are good, too. (Out of print, sorry).
Happy hunting!
Karen
EsbyMemberThis isn’t part of a series, but the book Ginger Pye is a mystery about a missing dog and perfect for your DD’s reading level. The author is Eleanor Estes, who has written other delightful books in addition to Ginger Pye.
CindySParticipantWe LOVE Ginger Pye…unsavory character…we were rolling!!
gr8tfulCMmomParticipantThanks..I’ll go see if our library carries any of these. I appreciate it!
