It was a blessing-filled evening Laughing I watched most of the Planning Your CM seminar and took a lot of great notes. After homeschooling for 3 years and trying everything possible, CM is so simple yet effective. It just makes so much sense to teach in this manner.

There is a lot I am reconsidering now Undecided but just feel at peace about using Charlotte Mason’s methods.

I really need to bite the bullet and buy the set.  I want it (should have asked for it for Christmas I guess) – I think it would really be beneficial to me.  Does it cover all years of schooling (K-12)?

It is an overview of how to use the CM methods in your homeschool as well as some great ideas to implement those ideas.

I guess that would make the answer a “yes”. It does not literally give you a schedule to work off of but helps you plan out your homeschool with the variety of CM methods.

    Hope that helps….

Hi Sarah – Well, I have several things to say about this.  I have had a real struggle to unschool myself in a lot of ways…I love the bright cheerful things that are made for schoolrooms and kids today.  The colors really appeal to me and I love organizing them.  That doesn’t say much about how they teach or affect the kids does it?  Sometimes I “forget” who I getting the “stuff” for.  Tristan wrote this in her post this morning about this subject, so thought I’d put it here:

“Another thing that jumps to mind when I read the part you quoted is just how fake a learning environment a preschool or public school classroom is. Those truly isolate children in what someone has decided is a ‘child environment’ appropriate to the age of children in that room. Very limiting!”

I have a house that I could make into a “school” or I can learn to use the REAL things around us to create this atmosphere that Charlotte was talking about.  I have hundreds of books, tons real-life supplies for different things, and a desire to teach my children and help them live up to their potential.  Often that seems overwhelming.

I got Books and Things last spring.  I spent the summer working to create my real-life environment – between gardening and canning.  It took me some time, but my friend who is starting to get into CM with me came over after I was done.  I showed her a few things I had changed and she gave me one of the coolest compliments I’ve ever gotten:  She said “you’ve turned your whole house into am atmosphere” – and only here will people understand what I am talking about.  lol

I better understand how to choose my books, and how to use them.  I learned how to use what I have instead of always “coveting” the newest thing in the catalogs for school.  I also learned that it is very important to not kill my children’s interest in learning, and thus in life, by trying to avoid the 4 pitfalls Sonya explains in her last segment of the set.

It helped me to get the hows behind the how-tos in the All Day Seminar.  It helps me accomplish the motto Charlotte gave to parents “Education is an atmosphere, a disipline, a life”.
