My older ds just turned 3, but he is a very advanced and attentive listener – at least when it comes to books. We read a combination of picture and chapter books to him, and he likes practically everything. Here are some that we (dh and I) have read multiple times to him and we all still enjoy.
Poems:
All the World – Liz Garton Scanlon
Bear Snores On – Karma Wilson
Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You – Nancy Tillman
The Frogs Wore Red Suspenders – Jack Prelutsky (lots of great poems that kids really enjoy)
Prose:
Peter Rabbit – Beatrix Potter
The Velveteen Rabbit – Margery Williams
The Whale’s Song – Dyan Sheldon
Stuart Little – E. B. White
Charlotte’s Web – E. B. White
Room for a Little One – Martin Waddell
The Mitten – Jan Brett
Ox-cart Man – Derrell Hall
Jingle the Brass – Patricia Newman (about trains)
The Tale of Three Trees – Angela Elwell Hunt
Rikki Tikki Tavi – Rudyard Kipling
and stories from Hilda Boswell’s Treasury of Children’s Stories (I’ve had my copy almost 40 years, but it is out of print for over 30 years now. It’s a great find if you can get it, I got 2 copies on Amazon for my sisters’ kids for about $10 each, but I had to check frequently for them, you might have better luck if you check Amazon.UK )
