I was reading aloud to my oldest ds 5yo today during naptime. He let me choose the first book and I of course went to ‘A Vistor For Bear’ by Bonny Becker. Most of the books I read aloud to him are not as fun for me the upteenth time. However, this book is just a delight to read. Do others have books that mommy just loves to read over and over?
Blueberries for Sal and Make Way for Ducklings by McCloskey
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Millions of Cats
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and Katy and the Big Snow (Burton)
Caps for Sale
Wilfrid Gordon Macdonald Partridge by Mem Fox (makes me cry every time)
The Snowy Day and Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats
Love You Forever by Robert Munsch (another crier)
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
The Big Green Pocketbook by Candice Ransom (dd’s favorite right now; unfortunately, it’s a library book, not one I own, so we can’t get it as often as she would like)
I was going to saw anything by Mc Closkey too. Actually I have a list here of all of our favorites on my blog here, but if I had to be pressed to name my very favorites McCloskey would be it. http://snowfallacademy.blogspot.fr/p/favorite-read-alouds.html
Another mcCloskey fan here! Blueberries for Sal is any the top of the list. I also like many of the ones mentioned. Others – Katy No Pocket, Danny’s Duck, Dogger, I like to Be Little.
Just wanted to say I checked out some of these books from the library and cried when I read “dogger” we also enjoyed Danny’s duck. Thanks for the recommendations.
My older ds just turned 3, but he is a very advanced and attentive listener – at least when it comes to books. We read a combination of picture and chapter books to him, and he likes practically everything. Here are some that we (dh and I) have read multiple times to him and we all still enjoy.
Poems:
All the World – Liz Garton Scanlon
Bear Snores On – Karma Wilson
Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You – Nancy Tillman
The Frogs Wore Red Suspenders – Jack Prelutsky (lots of great poems that kids really enjoy)
Prose:
Peter Rabbit – Beatrix Potter
The Velveteen Rabbit – Margery Williams
The Whale’s Song – Dyan Sheldon
Stuart Little – E. B. White
Charlotte’s Web – E. B. White
Room for a Little One – Martin Waddell
The Mitten – Jan Brett
Ox-cart Man – Derrell Hall
Jingle the Brass – Patricia Newman (about trains)
The Tale of Three Trees – Angela Elwell Hunt
Rikki Tikki Tavi – Rudyard Kipling
and stories from Hilda Boswell’s Treasury of Children’s Stories (I’ve had my copy almost 40 years, but it is out of print for over 30 years now. It’s a great find if you can get it, I got 2 copies on Amazon for my sisters’ kids for about $10 each, but I had to check frequently for them, you might have better luck if you check Amazon.UK )
The Frances books by Russell Hoban. Jim Trelease who wrote the Read Aloud Handbook says: if you like Jane Austen you will love the Frances books. I have voices for the characters and tunes for her little songs. My children grew up hearing Frances and now I’ve been reading them to the grandchildren. I just finished a college writing class where I had to write an emulation paper. I rewrote Bedtime for Frances to be Naptime for Biella which is about my youngest granddaughter who never wants to take a nap. One of my daughters read it and said, “I could hear your Frances voice while I read it.”
