This may be a silly question. What do you study for art and music for the first 3 history time periods? Would you just study artifacts and instruments that may have been used or discovered during those times? Looking for suggestions as we start Genesis thru Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt this Fall. We are new to CM and new to pulling things together on my own, although I am loving the suggestions on SCM! I am just used to a boxed curriculum. Thanks!

In a CM approach you don’t have to stick to one time period — that is, you could do ancient history but more modern art. Having said which, there are quite a bit of artifacts to study from Egypt, Greece and Rome. I love Hillyer’s books on art, architecture and sculpture. Speaking of which, don’t forget that it can be more than paintings. Statues and buildings are art too. I don’t really know of music from this period.

Have you seen The Stuff They Left Behind portfolios that SCM sells?  They are fantastic.  They are available for Egypt, Greece and Rome.

I wouldn’t worry about it all matching up.  We are covering Renaissance this year and there’s no way we can get to all the great artists of the time period!  I’ve read it can be confusing to cover a bunch of similar artists/composers in a row.  It’s nice to mix up the different music/art eras so your DC aren’t confusing the similar paintings or compositions.

SCM does have ready-to-go materials for artist and composer studies, or you can easily make your own plans.  Your library should have lots of resources and CDs available too.  If you scroll down to the “Picture Study Demonstration” video here, it really simplifies picture study.

I highly recommend The Stuff They Left Behind to enrich your history studies! They are fantastic.

However, I would simply pick artists and composers that appeal. You need not line them all up to make the connections for your kids. Keep a Book of Centuries to help you keep things in order.

Great advice, thanks everyone! I knew they didn’t need to line up, I was just curious what others did and if there were some great ideas to go along with the time periods. I will certainly look at The Stuff They Left Behind too. Again, thanks! Loving these forums. So helpful! 🙂
