I’m looking for a program for my grade 7 ds. Any opinions of these 4 programs?? I have searched the forum and have read quite a bit, but I’m still undecided. I don’t foresee any science-y related careers in his future (but you never know, right?), but I know he doesn’t want to be handicapped in this area.
I’d like him to be as independent as possible, if that helps. Plus, we do use Math Mammoth as a supplement right now until I decide.
TIA.
thowellParticipantDd11 has just began Systematic Mathematics Establishing The Basics. WOW, is all I can say. This program is really teaching her to think for the first time. She has used Abeka, TT, and Math Mammoth and none of them seem to click. This one works! There is something about the way Mr. Paul teaches and presents the concepts that really work for her. Just FYI you can contact the company and even though Mr. Pual is retired his daughter id running the company. She spent 45 minutes on the phone with dd11 the other day helping her get something she was stuck on.
Rachel WhiteParticipantDo you want a mastery or spiral program?
Rachel
joannarammellParticipantI have spoken with Mr. Paul myself before he retired. He’s awesome. I agree it is a great program. No frills. Very clear.
my3boysParticipantThank you for the replies. We are currently using a spiral approach and I don’t have any poor opinions of it, I’m just looking for something else. Each program approaches the concepts differently (and some the same) and I think he (maybe more I) needs something new.
I will check out Systematic Mathematics again ( he’s the one that uses the hippo, right??).
joannarammellParticipanthippo? LOL…I think I must not have watched that part. 🙂
thowellParticipant( he’s the one that uses the hippo, right??).
Haha Yes, that is his rule. The hippopatamus rule. My dd11 loves this.
my3boysParticipantLove it! And, it makes sense.
RenelleParticipantWe are using Teaching Textbooks ourselves and are very happy with it. In our home ed circle here we have heard wonderful reviews of Teaching Textbooks, Life of Fred, Math U See, Singapore and Saxon.
When we were looking for a programme we tried as many of the style we could with free samples on etc and our ds chose TT. He has been using it for 6 1/2 months now and I am starting to see ds get it.
Systematic Mathematics does sound intriguing.
All the best chosing.
my3boysParticipantThanks Renelle. I have had my son check out the TT website and he’s beginning the placement test today, so we’ll see. I’m excited for him to try something new. I probably would’ve liked for him to try MUS, but without calling them I’m unsure of placement. Systematic Math. sounds good, too, but I think it’s going to be TT this time around. Thanks everyone.
