I am planning a special mommy and me night with my 6 yo girl. In the past, we have watched and enjoyed 4 American Girl movies: Kit, Felicity, Samantha, and Molly. She wants to watch a Barbie movie she saw advertised, but I would like something better. I would like to stay away from animated. Any ideas?
RebekahyParticipantDo you mean on DVD or at the theatre?
TristanParticipantWhat about an episode of Little House on the Prairie? (preview, some have topics you may not want to address at her age). Or Anne of Green Gables?
KarenParticipantOr Tales from Avonlea – even my little girls (4 and 5) like those – and they keep the interest of me, too.
Wings2flyParticipantProbably at home on DVD or streaming Netflix or Amazon Prime. I don’t mind renting one on streaming. There usually is not anything appropriate in theaters, unless you know of something good that’s in theaters now.
I will check on those titles. Thanks.
ByHisGraceMemberMy children suggested Horse Crazy. Squeaky clean, cute and funny. It held my interest and made me laugh, too. It’s on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulZOxTeIZmE
(The little girl seems bossy at the beginning of the movie, but keep watching … she’s a hoot .)
vikingkirkenParticipantMy daughter adores the Sound of Music! She’s 7 now, but she was 5 or 6 the first time she watched it.
stephw2ParticipantI second the Sound of Music. It is a bit long, but my daughter didn’t have a problem with the length. She loves to watch it!!!
Wings2flyParticipantThanks. I will check out Horse Crazy, as she likes horses. We have watched the Sound of Music. We did enjoy it, so that is a great recommendation I had forgotten about. We have also seen Little Women (one of my favorites). What about The Secret Garden? Is there a good version of that movie, or are none recommended?
jeaninpaParticipantWe loved Pollyanna.
RebekahyParticipantOh yes, Pollyana!!! Yes, Anne of Green Gables!!! Cheaper by the Dozen (the old black and white version is great NOT the Steve Martin one). Shirley Temple as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm!!! Little Women with Liz Taylor, also National Velvet – horse movie with Liz Taylor. Miracle on 34th Street. Shirley Temple in Heidi and The Little Princess. Chitty, Chitty bang bang. The Sound of Music. Mary Poppins.
RebekahyParticipantTwo weeks with love with Jane Powell http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043081/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl See Description. This is very light hearted fun.
Our Vines have Tender Grapes with Margaret O’Brien http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Vines_Have_Tender_Grapes This one has some more intense parts.
Oldies but goodies – my grandma introduced me to all these movies when I was your daughter’s age and now my own five girls are enjoying them – we find them to be so much better than the more modern movies – though we do love all the Barbie ones too, probably including the one your daughter wants to see (The Pony Tale??? – we just got it from Redbox and it was cute).
ByHisGraceMemberWing2fly – I sent you a PM.
erin.kateParticipantI love these ideas!
nerakrParticipantWhat about Charlotte’s Web?
