It was funny trying to find the best place to post a question about movies on this forum. After all, where do movies fit into a CM education? 🙂
We don’t watch television a lot in our family. Typically the children are allowed to watch one 30-minute children’s show on Saturday mornings. However they don’t even get that every week as we choose audio stories some times instead.
But I’ve realized as they grow older it would be nice to have some good titles of movies available to have a family movie night every once in a while. Titles, perhaps, like the Little House on the Prairie series. I know everyone’s list of movie options may look different but I wondered what classic or older titles you’d recommend? Perhaps there are newer titles I should consider as well? Nature films, documentaries, history stories, all sorts are welcome suggestions….

We like some of the older disney live movies… like Swiss Family Robinson. (But most people would say they need to read the book first…)

I have to second the Disney Earth films…they are AMAZING!
Blue J–are you referring to the new Narnia movies, or to the BBC films? Our library has the BBC ones, but I don’t know anyone who’s watched them, so I was curious. I have enjoyed the new Narnia films to a certain extent, but I think that they have been progressively lower in quality as they have come out. I watched “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” the other day and was actually quite disappointed…both because of some of the content, and the quality of the production.

Here’s an old thread with movie title suggestions. Last month we watched the classic Swiss Family Robinson after reading it with the boys. Also, I Am David based on the book by Anne Holm – Excellent!

Oh, we loved the BBC Narnia series! Our library has a copy as well. Of course the special effects are not as dramatic, but the actors are wonderful. Lucy is just the sweetest little girl ever. Give it a try, I am sure you will like it.
Making me want to watch it again LOL. I will have to put it on my library list!

We have a watched a lot of older kids movies (not cartoons though we have seen those too) like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Totoro, a Japanese movie, is wonderful. We love the Little House series too.

Our family enjoys all the Christiano movies– they have a website and you can save money by buying them
In bundles. They are great to watch with unsaved in-laws—they always have the Gospel in them. They are great for spurring on deep discussions and really make movie time worth while.
Recently, we have been enjoying the old John Wayne movies also–they are really a hoot– and the good guy always wins.

Good Evening,
I am new to this forum, but would like to contribute to this post. Some movies our family has enjoyed with our two older children (11 and 17) are:
I Remember Mama (B&W) – a sweet story of a Norweigan family living in 1910 San Francisco.
The Winslow Boy – a good movie, but slow at times, worth hanging in there. Set in Britain where a young man is accused of theft while in school; his family believes he is innocent and fights to clear his name.
The original Nancy Drew Movies (B&W) with Bonita Granville- just plain funny with wonderful dialogue and great story plots; even our youngest enjoy these! There are 4 movies on 2 discs, we borrow them from the library.
I second all the Christiano films; they are great. We especiallly like Time Changer; a must have.
Emma; we enjoy the A&E version, it was well done.

Sargeant York with Gary Cooper; a very good adaptation of the book. Sargeant York chose Gary Cooper to play him in the movie- First World War
