Ladies, I am in need of some movies that are good for DH and me & ones for the family. We are sick of the ones we have and have watched about 100 times each.
We just watched FireProof (DH & I) and loved it! Would like more movies like this one which was about marriage and holding it together.
Looking for more idea’s
Misty
csmammaParticipant“Facing the Giants” by the same directors of FireProof is excellent!!
janet_krettMemberWe rented “The Last Sin Eater” awhile ago. Horrible name, but a fantastic story. Watch it first before the kids. Some of it may be a little frightening, depending on your kids.
As far as movies about marriage and holding it together, I’m curious to see what other people recommend. We, like you, are in the same boat as far as movies go.
Janet
SusanMemberFlywheel is a wonderful movie by the same directors of Fireproof & Facing the Giants. Also the extra footage is great–don’t miss that!

the9clarksParticipantNetflix has a TON of Christian films, we have noticed. In addition to the Kendrick movies already mentioned, and The Last Sin Eater which I LOVED,
Belle and the Beast
Overcome
Joshua
Time Changer
Perfect Stranger
Another Perfect Stranger (my older (7-11) kids really enjoyed this one)
(Animated) The King and I, Ben Hur, and The Ten Commandments
Torchlighters (various)
House Full of Blessing
The First Blast of the Trumpet
Glory to God Alone: The Life of JS Bach
The First of May
*Pamela’s Prayer*
The Ultimate Gift
Me & You, Us, Forever
Rachel WhiteParticipantOther movies by Michael Landon Jr. are the “Love Comes Sofly” by Janette Okely. There are several. My children, 8 and 7 watched the first 3. They are romantic westerns, but the romance is between marrieds in the Frontier times.
Landon Jr. seems to be a filmmaker who makes more wholesome films; he also made the “Last Sin-Eater” movie. It is good and intersting, but kind of creepy for little ones. I’d say ‘middle-school’ age.
remember the movies from 50= yrs. ago, starring:
Jimmy Stewart (esp. Mr. Smith goes to Washington, but he had many good ones)
Shirley Temple
Hayley Mills (early Disney)
the early, non-animated Disney movies(I think there are many good ones thru the 60’s)
John Wayne
Roy Rogers movies
Old Musicals (though I’m careful about adding too much romanticism, esp. for my dd)
There are many good, old black and white movies from the 30’s and 40’s.
We’ve also enjoyed remastered, DVD’s of old tv, like Robin Hood with Robert Green, LOne Ranger, Rin Tin TIn nd Lassie.

Daniellemomof4MemberMy family (I have dd16, ds12, dd10, ds7) just watched the Anne of Green Gables Series and liked it. We also just saw a movie recently called Random Harvest (b&w) that we all loved. Above Rubies put out a “Recommended Movies” list that they emailed and I just printed out and use to add movies in our Blockbuster Queue. Above Rubies doesn’t endorse the movies-it is a list compiled by all their readers’ recommendations. You can probably check out their website to see if they have it on there. If not, I am sure you could email them for the list. Our family also owns a Clear Play DVD player which helps, but my husband still watches the movies in it first to see what it filters out. We use it because there are great movies out there that still have language and “other” references-for example October Sky. Hope this helps!
Blessings,
Danielle
csmammaParticipantI thought I’d bring this topic up again because we recently watched an excellent movie titled “Faith like Potatoes”. Misty, you mentioned wanting a movie that would encourage “holding it together” and this is definitely one of those. However, I suggest previewing it before little ones watch due to a traumatic accident scene.
Blessings,
Heather
BookwormParticipantWe love movies. I can heartily recommend some of the ones mentioned above, like Faith Like Potatoes, Facing the Giants, etc. Another really good source for family films is Feature Films for Families. Their website is http://www.familytv.com Now, we can’t afford to BUY many from these people, but we make notes of ones we’d like to see, request them on Netflix, and then watch them when they get in. We’ve liked every one we’ve seen.
Also, a lot of the movies that Walden Media has done have been pretty good, although I definitely don’t recommend ALL of them, and I recommend reading the parental guides at a good movie review site first.
csmammaParticipantIts been some time but this post is one my fav’s to pull up when we have family movie night. Just thought I’d let you know of another good one we watched recently “The Secrets of Johnathan Sperry.” It had some questionable content in the beginning of a young boy age 12 wanting to “ask out” a girl. However, that is quickly redeemed when he befriends a Godly widower who shares the gospel with him. Our family loved it, but be prepared – its a tear jerker.
LindseyDParticipantThanks, Heather! Our DVD/VHS collection is becoming a bit worn out. I needed some fresh material!
kcoardParticipantI alwaya check the site Christian Spotlight on Entertainment for reviews.
my3boysParticipantThe Last Sin Eater is a good movie, but the book is better. I read it quite awhile ago and had been fooled by the title and cover (I didn’t think it was going to be very good), but I love the author, Francine Rivers, so I had to give it a shot. What a heart-wrenching story, but the truth of redemption and forgiveness, among other things, is wonderfully spelled out.
Thanks for the movie ideas everyone:)
BritneyMemberMy two favorite that we have watched this year are The Ultimate Gift (which someone already mentioned) and Letters to God which just came out on DVD recently. It was wonderful!!! Be prepared with tissues!
Daniellemomof4MemberI would like to second Heather’s recommendation of The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry! My daughter and I were blessed to be able to preview the movie before it came out at the theaters and we loved it. The Director was there and told us about the testimony of Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing from the Love Boat) which is an amazing story! Definitely have Kleenex ready-and yes, we didn’t like the boy/girl stuff either but it is resolved in the end with great choices.
Blessings,
Danielle
