MOH vs SCM and loved it a lot more?

  • Okay I have bought all the Mystery of History books years past.  Love it but with such a big family I am still finding trouble with time and then how do you get living books in there too.  So thought of using it as a spin.  And then trying to find books to fit.  But it moves pretty fast so you are often on the next thing before any children could be down their reading.

Did anyone here try MOH and then switch over to SCM here and just love it?  Was it more simplified yet still very throuough of topics and mixing in Bible history with secular history.

Pros or cons?  Or did any of you go the other way?

I am:    trying to simplify with such a busy house and wants more reading.  Even thinking Robinson Circulumn approach?  Does anyone use that here?

    thanks Shannon

I used MOH for a couple of years.  Just my.02, but what I found was similar to what you’re saying.  It moved so fast and covered so many topics minutely, that my kids don’t remember much from those years (they were young).  *I* loved MOH, but it wasn’t great for the kids.  I never got around to trying to fit in living books, but that would have been difficult, I think.

Currently, we are using Truthquest along with SCM’s history selections, and it’s working beautifully.  Kids love the books and are much more engaged.  We don’t even use a spine—-use the guide as our spine (Biblical commentary).  But once my oldest hits Jr. Hi or H.S. will add one again.  You could do the same thing with the SCM guides, they aren’t completed yet for the cycle we are on.  I’m fairly new to SCM, but people seem to really like the guides and they are inexpensive.  Hopefully others will chime in:)    Gina

We experienced the same thing in our homeschool.  I loved the idea of the MOH, but in reality, it didn’t work out like I had hoped, especially for a CM approach and trying to tweak it didn’t work either.  I honestly feel like my kids have a better understanding of the time period we’re in just by reading from the books listed and discussing whatever comes to mind, plus adding some of the historical figures to their timelines/BOC for reinforcement.

We are using Module 5 right now without a guide and I think we’re doing just fine (I know I would love the guide, but will just have to wait:).

There is a tag at the top right corner of this page and if you click on that you can read one or two discussions on this very topic.  I actually started one of them at one time.  HTH

What is BOC.  thanks I will have to check out the tag.

A Book of Centuries (BOC) that SCM provides as a free download for a timeline.  We use one for our 11 yo and the Wonders of Old timeline book for my 8yo.
