  • I would like to compile a list for my son that includes some more modern books, but hopefully not too twaddle-ish! He loves to read series, and so if any if you have recommendations for these kind of books, I’d love for you to share.

    Thank you much!

    What is your son’s age?

He’s 13. He’s read through a previous list I made a few months ago, and I’m needing more recommendations now. It’s hard because most classics he doesn’t enjoy reading too much independently (although he enjoys these as family read alouds). So I try to find more modern ones that are decently written and appeal to his adventurous side. 🙂

Not sure how new your thinking…but this would be the PERFECT time for the Ralph Moody books (Father and I Were Ranchers – not sure if that’s the name of the whole series or what…but it tells what they’re about) – Little Britches and Man of the Family especially…and then he’d want to read the rest I’m sure.  I read these with my son when he was 12 and we both THOROUGHLY enjoyed them.  They did my heart good and made me a better mother.  Gave us both some noble ideas – food for the mind.  I needed it as much as he.  They are great coming of age stories, they’re true, they help a mother to see how she can help inspire her son to be a man, and a son to see the man he could be…right now.  I LOVE these books! They’re on my must read list for all my boys – and we’ll read them together again if we can.  But I think they would be very doable for most 13 yo to read alone.

That sounds lovely anniepeter. I will look into these for my ds summer reading. And I might just read it with him as you suggested. I SO need inspirational material with raising my “coming of age” boy.

    Thank you!

Redwall series, Peter and the Starcatchers series, Inkheart series… those are all good ones.  You might want to preview them.  They have some unsettling moments and I wouldn’t give them to a child who wasn’t well-grounded spiritually.  I know that a lot of people would not recommend the Peter books or the Inkheart books… it really depends on the kid.  These would be great to read alongside them so you can discuss together.  They are all adventurous.  Oh, my son also enjoyed the other short series by Brian Jacques… something about the flying dutchman I think, but I can’t remember the name right now.  And the Crispin books by AVI are good.

My kids are slightly younger, but I think all of these books would be enjoyed by a 13 year old.

Pslively, I am so happy to see a book review site like this! I use Plugged In for movies, but had no idea that a christian book review site existed. Did you sign up for this, or do you just reference it as needed?

Also, several months ago I asked this forum about Avi and received no response. So I didn’t pursue it. I’m guessing not many people have read his books. I feel better about checking these out now! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!!

You are so welcome.  I only recently found that book review site.  I did not sign up for it.  It’s just there for anyone to use.  There is another one called RedeemedReader, but they don’t seem to have as many books.

We love the AVI books here.  We have only read two series though, so I can’t give a thumbs-up to all of them.  The other set of his that we read were about a brother and sister coming to America from Ireland in the 1800’s.  I can’t remember the name of them, but if you see those you might want to check them out.  They are brutal in their truth telling, but not graphic…. meaning that does not hide that REALLY bad things happen in the world, but neither does he dwell on them and try to sensationalize them.

Just thought of one more suggestion… the fiction books by N.T. Wilson are supposed to be good.  I tried reading one and did not enjoy it at all, so I never got past the first couple of chapters.  (It just wasn’t my kind of book.)  While I can’t recommend them based on my reading them, I do know that N.T. Wilson is Doug Wilson’s son (the pastor/writer who is big in the Christian Classical schooling world) so I would feel pretty good about recommending them as far as content goes.

We are Doug Wilson fans here. His son Nate has some good books, but honestly I think the stories are somewhat above my son’s reading ability because he says he gets lost in the story line. Maybe in another year or two…

FYI, the Tilt A Whirl DVD by ND Wilson is very good. I plan to have my kids watch it when they are ready for it. 🙂 It truly brings a sense of who we are and eternity.

Has he read The Mysterious Benedict Society trilogy and prequel? My ds11 LOVED those.

Also, The Candymakers and Half Magic have been fun summer reads, both on the Sonlight list.

And, both my ds11 and dd9 enjoyed Savvy and Scumble by Ingrid Law…also fun summer reads.

    Hi SimpleHome!

Has he ever read The Viking Quest Series or The Kindom Series? All my boys absolutly love these! Also, how about The Door Within Trilogy , The Terrestria Chronicles, or My Side of the Mountain Trilogy? Not sure what your son has read yet but there are so many good choices for this age.

To those who mentioned Tilt a Whirl, looks very appealing :). Thanks for sharing.

    Blessings, Heather
