I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between the two? I’ve heard some say water ones are best and others like the milk grains. Anyone make kefir and/ or can tell me what they like about each? And the differences with the health benefits?
Also I’m trying to look for a reliable source to buy them (or just one type) once I decide which one to go with!
Gracias!
Erica
NoeMomParticipantI have used both, and my children enjoyed both, but they are quite different in my opinion. The milk kefir grains made a thickened fermented milk product; think thin yogurt. The water kefir grains were used to make a fizzy juice, supposably a healthy replacement for soda. My children also enjoy kombucha, which is another fizzy drink we flavored with pure fruit juice. I have had good results with the products from Cultures for Health, an online resource. I have heard you can find people online who will send them to you for the cost of shipping, so that might be worth a shot too. Hope that helps:-)
Rachel WhiteParticipantYou can get free kefir grains online, or buy them at Cultures for Health or from the box. Here’s the Dom’s all about kefir site:http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/Makekefir.html
Here’s an article comparing the two: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/expert-advice/compare-milk-kefir-versus-water-kefir.html

I wish I had extra to share, but I don’t right now-sorry!
HTH,

p.s. You can make cheese from kefir, too (and cheese balls).
spoutygirlParticipantWow thanks for all the info!
A couple more questions though: we drink raw milk so would that work ok for making kefir?
Also how do you make kefir cheese and what does it taste like?
Thanks!
Erica
RebekahyParticipantYes, raw milk works great for Kefir (probably has much more benefit than pasteurized milk)!
Rachel WhiteParticipantYes, raw milk is the preferable milk in any situation, IMO.
You make kefir cheese like yogurt cheese (which is my preferred one). The taste is strong.
I thought it easier to direct you to antoher site than try to explain myself:
