Hello!  I’m hoping someone could help me with the usage of the items in CM Arithmetic Book 1 Kit.  I have chosen to buy the kit materials separately to save money, but without knowing the exact purpose of the parts, am not sure if I’m buying the right thing.  I can use slate and chalk instead of whiteboard right?  Does the lacing cord just need to fit the holes of the beads?  (Because there is leather, plastic, chenille and on…). Do the metal rings need to come apart/clasp?  Does their size matter?  Am I putting something on them?  Or are they just for counting?  I bought medium sized metal key rings (like for keychains), but not sure if when it comes time to do the lesson, they will be wrong kind/ size.  I think the other items are pretty straight forward but those ones I need some clarity please!  One last thing, how many each of $1, 25c, 10c, 5c, 1c are needed?  Thank you in advance!!

    50 pennies, 20 dimes, 20 nickles, and $1 bill.

Hi there!  The metal rings are for the beads and will need to be able to open/close fairly easily.  The string/shoe lace will be used for the child to make a money pouch.

A slate and chalk will work fine.

Thank you so much that was a huge help!  One last thing…the golf pencils…is there something I could use alternatively that would serve the same purpose rather than spending $20?

The Golf pencils are another way of making ten bundles.  You can use anything you have around the house.  🙂

I’d like to add that the kits are not essential.  We have put them together because families often ask for open and go.  They’d prefer everything at their fingertips rather than needing to piece things together.  I have the kits in my home and we’ve used them but we’ve also created manipulative out of twigs, legos, hot wheels (obviously I have boys 😜), paint brushes (we have several), crayons, beans, rocks, grapes, raisins, chocolate chips, etc.  Obviously not all can be wrapped into a 10 bundle but my #3 visualizes well without wrapping them into a bundle.  Sometimes we’ll put the small items that are being turned into a 10 bundle into individual ramekins, tea cup saucers, etc.

Is there any reason why I couldn’t use the popsicle sticks in place of the golf pencils for the bundles?  What are the popsicle sticks for?  I don’t mind accumulating all the kit bits, and I’d like to have it 🙂
