Does anyone have suggestions on how I can help my 13 yr. old who struggles in math?

He does fairly well with math concepts, but when it comes to precision in his computations he has a hard time. In fact, we can spend hours on him correcting his work and it’s as simple as subtracting or adding incorrectly. He is also somewhat slow with quickly recalling math facts back, though he knows them.

I do not want to declare a learning disability but it is clear that there is a problem. Perhaps the learning style? I believe another approach would help, but I don’t know what approach that would be.

    Any feedback is welcomed…thank you!

My children have used xtramath.org for math fact drill.  They usually spend 10 minutes each day, four days per week for 4 – 8 weeks to master all the facts for one operation with a 3 second recall.  This helps higher math go smoother with less errors.  The free online program tests more on the ones they need to learn and less on the ones they already know well.  However, they do need to already have an understanding of strategies for the “why” behind their facts.  And it helps if they will say out loud the equation and correct answer when they miss one.
