Since we are studying an area of the world that does not have a fancy coordinating “Visits to…” book from SCM yet, I am trying to use some of those ideas on my own.  The SCM “Visits to…” notebooks encourage making your own map of particular countries and they include a map to trace that includes rivers, cities, etc.  I’m wondering if somebody knows where I can find nice, clear maps like that for my children to trace.

    Thanks for your help.

I’m not sure where you can find clear maps to trace, but you can print them out of an outline map book onto clear transparency paper.  You should be able to find that at Staples, OfficeMax, etc.  We are using Uncle Josh’s Outline Map book, and the Tapestry of Grace curriculum we are using suggests making a nice atlas “book” from base maps- which would be the outline of the country but no cities, nations, rivers, lakes, etc.  And then you overlay transparencies which you would mark the things you are studying.  I think you could do it a couple of ways, but that would be a basic idea to get you started.  Also, you might check Rainbow Resource or CBD Homeschool for map transparencies if you wanted something that’s already printed.  I hope that helps you just a little. 😉

We also use Uncle Josh’s Outline Maps book for geography. I photocopy them, but you could also trace them. They’re blank, with rivers and water bodies marked in gray. Love them!

It’s funny, but when I said “clear maps” I meant easy-to-read, not transparent.  🙂  We do use the Uncle Josh’s maps for labeling, but I’d like individual maps of the countries we will study.  I’ve found some colored maps on worldatlas.com, but they seem so cluttered with color and other stuff that I think they would be hard to trace.  So I was just hoping someone knew of a site where I could find simple maps for tracing.

Thanks for the suggestions and the help though.

Oops….thought you meant transparent!  I am not sure of individual maps for each country.  Maybe a National Geographic map website?  I know they have a website somewhere where you can print their maps off.  Actually, look into WonderMaps as well.  It’s from Bright Ideas Press.  They have all kinds of options you can layer in on the maps and then print them out.  That could be an option.
