Y’all don’t know how I like to be organized and perhaps how much I hate keeping up with paper. Confession, I’ve done a horrible job of keeping up with homeschool portfolios over the years. I used to dump every scrap of paper into a big brown pocket folder, shut it, mark it with name and year and call it done. It the past few years, I’ve simply dumped in a box.

I had an epiphany while sorting mountains of papers and drawings this afternoon. While that sounds dramatic, even to me, I think I’ve hit on the best solution for our digital family! Anything done on paper – math, written narrations, drawings, etc. I will scan using my scanner app on my phone. It works just like taking a photo, but a bit better for my purpose. Narrations that have been typed are easy to save. All of it will go into a digital notebook on One Note. Voila! Easy, done, and without clutter. I’m even going to set a reminder in my phone to add samples every 4-6 weeks so I’m not playing catch-up years after the fact.

You may love paper and think I’m nuts or you may have already hit upon something else that works for you, but if not then maybe this idea will help you!

LOL, I’m in the ‘love paper and think you’re nuts’ camp.  BUT I know of at least one other mom who does keep digital records instead and she loves it. Enjoy!

I have a “caution” for you:

Be careful of the size of your scans/pictures. I use OneNote heavily for our farm business…….and my tablet is maxed out – I can’t put any more apps on it.

Perhaps I’m too tech-dumb to know how to do anything different (I do have a large miniSD card, but it seems that OneNote won’t let me save things there. When my tablet last updated, OneNote was the biggest user of space. I scan all our crop planting, harvesting bills and records. All the hoof trimming records, etc. into OneNote, and we love it. But it’s a space hog for me.

Of course, it could be the pictures of the girls’ clothes that I keep in there, too…..I take pics of their seasonal wardrobes to help prevent me from buying what we don’t need…..maybe scans are smaller than pics.

Anyway, I love your idea of using OneNote!

I use One Note on my computer and back up to Dropbox and at the moment have loads of space.  I’ll keep an eye out though.  Alternatively, I could just keep it all on Dropbox.

Tristan, my friends think I’m nuts for several reasons so I’ll claim it!
