This is the only place where I see a gently approach and the kids are involved together. I have a 3rd grader and a 10th grader (if you go by grades. We have been blessed to homeschool (10 years and countint) and use an eclectic approach. We were doing 9th grade highschoollast year and this was a little sad for me because we weren’t learning together and my son was tucked away on his own for most of the day. I want to be together. Our oldest is doing high school level work and is college bound. I realize he has his own math, science and other requirements. I looked at the schedule on the SCM site and I’m a little scared to try it………how do you just jump in at the family level with a high schooler?s How do you do it when there is a budget and you can’t afford all of the terrific books? (Our last 3 yrs of homeschool have been loosely using My Father’s World and we’ve used a bit of Learning Adventures by Dorian Holt.)

I have found SCM to be less expensive than many other curriculum options out there. But buying books definitely adds up! Do you have a good library near you? That would help defray the cost significantly.

I like to buy most of my books used and have found that Amazon Marketplace often has what I need at a good price, especially if I don’t need it right away and I can wait and watch for a quality book at a good price. I keep a list on my computer of what I will need and watch the prices. Maybe that would help? Also doing it that way spreads out the cost over the course of the school year, which helps.

I agree with you about not wanting my high schooler always off on his own… I love being involved in discussing what my high schooler is learning through narrations and things like that. Have you looked at the samples of the SCM family handbooks? They are very inexpensive and they make it so easy to use the recommended resources with different ages. I really like the handbooks!

I am making the transition to SCM with a highschooler too. Wanting to study together as a famiy is what brought me here. I have a 9th grader on down to K. I think you will find lots of support here. 🙂

I agree with what Jenn said…I find this curriculum to be much more affordable than some of the other options out there. It still does add up though when you add in math, science, ect. I purchase many books used from Amazon and homeschoolclassifieds. I also use Paperback Swap to get books for the year.
