My boys age 10-12 would like to do a study about weather. I have the AiG Our Weather and Water book but I was also looking for some living books or other interesting books to go along with the study. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TristanParticipantHmm, I’m not too familiar with any. If they were a bit younger or if you think they will enjoy them there are Magic School Bus books (both regular picture books and chapter books) on weather. Everything from tornados to electric storms to hurricanes to weather in general.
teachme2learnParticipantThanks Tristan! There are so many delightful conversational books about animals, I was hoping there might be something about weather, weather patterns, precipitation, climate, weather information, etc.
2flowerboysParticipantYES! We still LOVE Magic School Bus! I think the age range is actually higher than recommended on some of those books..I mean I LEARN a lot myself…LOL!! Have fun!
TristanParticipantI can’t believe I forgot – here are some, but you’ll have to wade through the chapters to find the ones about weather:
The Story Book of Science by Jean Henri Fabre: Here is Yesterday’s Classics description of the book (but you may find it free on Project Gutenberg, not sure…) The wonders of plant and animal life told with rare literary charm by Uncle Paul in
conversations with three children. Besides such stories as the ants’ subterranean city,
the spider’s suspension bridge, and the caterpillars’ processing, he unlocks the mystery
behind thunder and lightning, clouds and rain, the year and its seasons, and volcanoes
and earthquakes. Ages 9-12

RobinPParticipantA few on my shelves…all older and probably OOP.
Everyday Weather by Schneider – explanations and experiments
All About the Weather by Tannehill
Weather by Seymour Simon
The First book of Weather by Wyler
Down Comes the Rain by Branley – a lets read and find out book, probably too young for your children but mention it for others
Junior Science Book of Rain, Hail, Sleet & Snow by Larrick
The Story of the Trade Winds by Brindze – interesting twist on your studies. What makes these winds and historical impact to sailors and explorers
The Wind by Bendick – I like her books
Hurricanes, Tornadoes and Blizzards by Hitte
Lightning and Thunder by Zim
Flash, Crash, Rumble and Roll by Branley – another let’s read and find out book
Lightning by Seymour Simon
TailorMadeParticipantWe used an awesome spine, The Weather Book, and got fun books out of the Juv NF section of the public library when we studied it quite a while ago. Here’s a link to The Weather Book.

teachme2learnParticipantThank you for all the suggestions!!! Now to find them.
HeatherParticipantWhat great suggestions! @TailorMade: I’ve seen the science books before by Michael Oard and have wondered about them. What ages would you suggest they be used for? Are they a narrative of the subject or do they read more like a textbook. Thanks!
AnonymousInactiveI’m also wondering what the age range might be for The Weather Book. Would it work well for high school level?
missceegeeParticipantI now this thread is old, but I’m planning on putting weather books out for free reading this term and found an awesome list here – http://4real.thenetsmith.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=39095&PN=1
