Do most have high school kiddos do logic? Would like to hear opinions about this. I see it mentioned alot in the Classical world but not much elsewhere? What are the pros and cons of this study? If you do teach it what are some favorite resources?
retrofamParticipantWe do a light logic study using The Fallacy Detectives, and The Thinking Toolbox.
Towards the end of high school, we use one book for rhetoric, “Speaking the Truth in Love” by, Daniel R. Berger.
jeaninpaParticipantWe’ve used Fallacy Detective in jr high (a co-op class) and we will be using The Art of Argument in high school.
pslivelyParticipantWe use the already mentioned resources as well. Thinking Toolbox and Fallacy Detective for middle school-ish years. These are best done out loud as a family, in my opinion. Following that, Art of Argument, also best in some sort of discussion group. My 14 and 13 year old kids will be doing James Madison Critical Thinking independently this year.
Future plans include the rest of the Art of Argument series of books and, possibly, William Lane Craig’s book on logic for children. In addition they will read Nancy Pearcey’s books, Total Truth and Finding Truth. These books help them to think logically about their faith and their world view and the views of others. I consider these two books essential for any Christian, especially those headed to college.
