I would not stop a book in the middle, personally. Pick something and read it, then pick something else. My kids do best when we read a bit from the same book every day. They live with the characters better and seem more invested in the outcome. You could have one going for school and read another at bedtime if you want. I’d also wait o. Heidi as the vocabulary for that one is more difficult. My kids are almost 7, 4 and 2. We love Winnie the pooh, little house books, Beatrix potter, Pollyanna and secret garden. I’d also wait on Shakespeare until you get more settled in reading and narrating chapter books. I don’t have my kids narrate lit books formally. We just refresh our memories before we start, and often tell daddy about our reading at dinnertime. I save narrating for bible, science, history, and geography.

Great suggestions so far.  I agree that you should read Dickens for yourself now. Read David Copperfield. Read  A Christmas Carol. Unabridged,of course. I try to read through one or two classics a year just for me. One consolation I have for my children is that they will have a lifetime to read the wonderful living books.  As much as I would like, I couldn’t possibly get them through half of what I’d like them to read in 12+years.

Your plan is fine. Another option would be to pick 5 books you really think are appropriate and that she will love and read one for 15 minutes or so per day. One for each day of the week. Or assign 7 if you are really excited about it. For example: Pooh on Mondays, Potter on Tuesdays, Little House on Wed., Secret Garden on Thurs., Charlotte’s Web on Fridays. You could add one extra as a bedtime reading that happens every night a few pages. Don’t require narrations of bedtime books. It may feel like it takes forever this way, but savoring the books is what you are after. It also builds anticipation and attention along with variety. Just a thought.

Don’t rush the readings at this age.  Just enjoy.  To your list, I might add: Charlotte’s Web, Peter Pan, Five Children and It, The Treasure Seekers, and the Wind in the Willows.

Great ideas. And gah! More great titles I now want to add! So many books, so little time. I was already pondering reading Dickens myself so thanks for further encouragement.

I get what your saying about reading 1 book all the way through. So if we read all of 1 Little House title & then focus on other titles for a while, will it be weird going into the 2nd Little House title later? Or maybe if we do some of the extras (crafts, recipes etc) that line up with the first book that will keep the story fresh in her mind even if we are reading from a different book. (Does that make sense?).

I love the idea of reading some of it at bedtime as well but, she can be pretty picky about what she wants. But, hopefully she will be interested in some of these for bedtime. I think she would LOVE Peter Pan & Charlotts Web at bedtime so I will definitely add those soon.

Thanks for answering all of my questions ladies!

It would be fine to read a different book after you finish one Little House book before you start the next one. In fact, I think that pace would offer more time for reflection. In my personal reading, I don’t like to read the same author back to back, even if I’m itching to read the next book. I find that I actually think about what I’ve read when I have time to savor it before rushing into the next book in the series. Just some thoughts…

Your little girl is blessed to have a mommy who cares so much about her reading!  She will be fine, Mom.  Don’t worry…just enjoy it!
