We’re on I think our third reading of the entire series. My son who is now 7 loves these books. Even though she’s a girl he really likes Laura. And Farmer Boy is about her husband Almonzo when he was a boy. They’re such wonderful stories that it just doesn’t matter that the main character is a girl. There is alot of action and alot of detailed description about how things were done and made in that day that he finds very interesting. Enjoy! 🙂

I’m a little late chiming in, but I wanted to share my experience.

My 6, 8, and 12 year old boys all love the Little House series, along with their 10 year old sister.  I’ve been reading through the series VERY slowly, so the younger two missed the first couple of books, but we’ll catch them again later.

About  two years ago, I gave my then 8 year old daughter a boxed set of Little House books that I had in storage.  My then 10 year old son was very disappointed.  He asked why I had given them to her and not to him.  I said “Well, I just thought they were more girl books than boy books, so I gave them to your sister.”  To which he replied, emphatically, “They are not GIRL books; they are PIONEER books!”  I had to agree with him, and will have to sometime buy him a set for him too.

All of my children love the Boxcar Children as well.  My oldest has collected several of the first 19 books.  He has outgrown them, but he shares them with his siblings.   I have only let them read the original ones, after trying one of the newer ones.   I don’t think the other books are nearly as well written.

    Enjoy!

My son hated these books. Frown

My 12 yr. old daughter and I have been reading them this year (I am reading aloud). We are on the 5th book (By the Shores of Silver Lake). She adores them, as do I. If I had this to do over with my son I would have just read him Farmer Boy.

My daughters like them……………..kind of.  We started with little house in the big woods.  I personally think it shares more boy stories than girl stories.  All of the chopping of wood and building a log home about bore my girls to death.  now we are on little house in the prairie and they like it but don’t love it.  We will finish the book though whether they want to hear it or not.  So much history in the books.  We have got out the map to see exactly how they traveled from state to state.
