Ok….here’s my plan, since I have also been watching all these treads. I have an upcoming 7th grader.

    Grammar: Winston’s

    Writing: Apologia’s Jump-in

    Literature: Teaching the Classics

    Does that cover everything?

    Or am I missing something??

Thanks, ladies. I appreciate this discussion. I’m so grateful for this forum it has been more help to me more times than any of you will ever know.

@Janell – thanks for mentioning Andrew Kern. A friend told me about him a few years back, but we weren’t there yet and it didn’t stick in my mind.

Janell, I agree; we go onto many wonderful rabbit trails, in-depth character (as you said “heart”) and plot discussions and the questioning comes naturally here; almost too much as we can get bogged down in discussing sometimes. I started reading classics when I hit around age 10, if you don’t count Little House series before that age. I am looking forward to the focus and mental discipline that I’m hoping TtC will provide.

To help put my list into perpsective: I should add in that Biblical Hebrew isn’t a big deal after Modern, so even though ds has 3 languages down for the high school years, two will be in not be new to them.

For my dd, same thing; her two languages will be Biblical Hebrew, like I said, will be relatively easy after many years of Modern, and continuing Latin.

Winston’s doesn’t cover something-I think mechanics, like punctuation and capitalization, etc.

It uses parsing instead of diagramming.

    That’s all I know!

This, and the other threads, have been very helpful for me as well.  It helped me be more aware of where I wanted them to end up and then working backwards, what we needed to do in order to get there.  And it sure helps to narrow things down when women you admire and respect give you suggestions!

It’s very calming for me to have a plan….after the initial freak out!  We’ll be facing yearly deployments for the next 10 years so it helps me to know that even when life gets crazy I can just move forward on my plan.  And when/if I get sick again, I can just follow my plan.  I love a good plan!

I also appreciate that there are so many excellent choices out there because when my life gets crazy I don’t always have the time or emotional energy to put together a program on my own.  I like that for some things like grammar I can just grab a package and use it.  I had never heard of Lightning Lit or Teaching the Classics before and now I know that I’ll have a trusty ‘friend’ to help me when I’m overwhelmed but need to keep moving forward.  And hopefully it will teach the boys to work on their own so that eventually I’ll just be the one who buys it and listens to their deep thoughts with a happy smile on my face.

Thank you so much.  Keep those suggestions and ideas coming!

Yes, I’m intrigued by Lost Tools of Writing, too!  We may use that. I love what I hear and am on their Yahoo Group.  Some of the messages scare me a bit, but I think it’s just getting used to the foreign terminology!  I hear it’s a great program to get kids to really think.   :)Gina
