Ok we were all set to start into our new year!  I printed off everything and low and behold I forgot to plan for literature for my 15 yr old ds.  He is into anything outdoors, and projects (building/fixing).  he likes motors and fixing them.  These books are not for history/science ect they are for the ‘extra’ reading during the day.  Please help.  Here is what he read last year David copperfield, To Kill a Mockingbird, the Choosen and 2 Shakespeare.  Need suggestions fast!

The Deerslayer by James Fenimore Cooper and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne are the first that came to my mind. My 16yos suggested The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

I always think of Little Britches series first thing for boys.  If he hasn’t read those, you might consider them for something lighter between the more challenging selections.

I like the suggestions so far. Also, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Call of the Wild, Old Yeller, Captains courageous, Kidnapped, Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island, and Jungle Book come to mind. All wonderful books we have enjoyed. My son is also 15.

Little Britches we tried but my dh wasn’t thrilled with the language.  But we listened on audio and probably reading it alone would be ok at 15?  Unfortunately all the other books he has already read Frown so I need more!  LOL  What a good problem to have.

Did you try checking the literature selections at AO?

How about some Dumas?  The Three Musketeers is a wonderful book, full of humor, and The Man in the Iron Mask as well.  Or some more Dickens?  The Old Curiosity Shop, Nicholas Nickelby, Our Mutual Friend.  Father Brown mysteries by Chesterton?  (I have not read these myself so can’t attest to the suitability.)  How about At the Back of the North Wind by George Macdonald?  It is not upper level as far as vocabulary, but I think you have to think more to understand the book.  I read it as an adult and thought it was beautiful.

Here is my whole high school list for my kids.  Maybe you can find something.  I have not read all of these, just pulled them from various sources.

    The Pilgrim’s Progress

    The Innocence of Father Brown

    Ivanhoe

    Sherlock Holmes

    Watership Down

    Gulliver’s Travels

    Jane Eyre

    Lorna Doone

    The Deerslayer

    The Last of the Mohicans

    The Heart of Darkness

    The Red Badge of Courage

    All Creatures Great and Small

    Goodbye Mr. Chips

    Les Miserables

    A Girl of the Limberlost

    A Tale of Two Cities

    The Robe

    Cheaper by the Dozen

    Bells on their Toes

    Ben Hur

How about The Yearling? Also, have you checked Sonlight suggestions for that age group? You might find some good titles your son hasn’t read yet there.

Great work ladies.  I did find a lot of great lit books from St. Thomas School writen by the Rioux’s with more upper level books but I am printing them out and looking for ones I can get my hands on cheap or through the library!

Little bitches series is note to be missed IMHO. The first two have some coarse cowboy language, but that’s it.

Second missceegee! Actually, my husband had the same issue…we turned it off and read aloud later skipping as needed. And I was SO GLAD we did. I needed it and the insights I gained from it made all the difference in my relationship with my son. Obviously he didn’t get the same thing from it that I did…but he highly enjoyed them too. Fr what it’s worth… The second book is the best for Mom IMO If you can only read one…

Oh my. Please forgive my misspelling. I was typing on my phone and coupled with recovering from the flu, I missed that. Little Britches is wonderful. One of the best character building series I’ve ever read or listened too.
